Zoe Ball reveals she failed to land the Strictly Come Dancing hosting gig and is 'grieving the rejection'
2026-05-12 · via News | Mail Online

Zoe Ball has revealed she has failed to land the Strictly Come Dancing job as she opened up for the first time.

Since Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman revealed that they would be stepping down, a number of celebrities have been tipped for the role.

And presenter Zoe, who previously hosted Strictly spin-off It Takes Two, revealed she 'didn't get' the gig and said she is 'working through the seven stages of grief and rejection'.

Despite missing out on the big Saturday night gig, Zoe said she is 'thrilled' for the people who got the role and insisted the BBC has made the 'right decision'.

Speaking on her Dig It podcast with Jo Whiley, Zoe said: 'I didn't get it, but it's OK.'

She continued: 'I have worked through the seven stages of grief and rejection over the last couple of days.

'No, I didn't get it, but I tell you, what, if who I think has got it, we're in safe hands and our new hosts are going to be fabulous. I'm so thrilled for them, and hopefully at a later date, we'll be able to talk about them in more detail.'

Zoe Ball has revealed she has failed to land the Strictly Come Dancing job as she opened up for the first time

Since Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman revealed that they would be stepping down, a number of celebrities have been tipped for the role

Opening up about not making the cut, Zoe added: 'I was so chuffed to even be in the mix. There were some pretty amazing people who didn't even make it into the mix.

'So I made it in the mix, and I had a really fun time having one last little play at a show that I love and adore. And I'm so thrilled for the gang that has got it.

'I think there's been so many eyes on this whole process, everyone's quite relieved now that a decision has been made and the right decision has been made.'

According to The Sun, Zoe wasn't the only star who shed tears after being rejected from the Strictly gig.

A source said: 'The television industry is cut-throat. From the off, the BBC had their favourites but they knew they couldn’t just shoe-horn in who they wanted — it had to come down to the chemistry tests. The celebs were put into mix-and-match pairs.

'The people who didn’t get offered the job just weren’t the right fit.

'Some have taken it better than others. One big star who was tipped from day one has been sobbing about it — they were convinced the job was theirs for the taking.

'They genuinely thought they’d the best chance but when it came down to what it felt like on screen, it didn’t work. Sadly, that’s the nature of the business and no amount of soggy Kleenexes will change the decision.'

It comes as Emma Willis is reportedly set to be announced as one of the new Strictly Come Dancing hosts.

Emma, 50, is now believed to be the front runner to take over one of the positions after she impressed during the chemistry tests, with the channel seeing her as a 'safe pair of hands'.

A source said: 'Emma has been offered the Strictly job and is going to accept. She absolutely nailed the chemistry tests and the BBC adore her.

'Emma is a household name and a safe pair of hands so the BBC know she will do the job justice.

'She's incredibly popular with the public too and will suit the role down to a tee. She was absolutely thrilled to have been offered the job.'

The insider also told The Sun: 'Strictly is one of the biggest shows on television and to be trusted with the new era is something Emma feels incredibly proud and humbled by.'

A BBC spokesman told the Daily Mail last night: 'Plans for Strictly Come Dancing 2026 will be confirmed in due course.'

Emma has held presenting roles on The Voice UK, Big Brother, The Circle and Love Is Blind: UK which she fronts alongside her husband, Matt.

There have been plenty of other names thrown into the mix to take over in the past few months, including Rylan Clark, Alison Hammond and Alex Jones.

And after weeks of speculation and multiple major names turning the job down, nine shortlisted stars were recently summoned to a top-secret location in London to battle it out in full-scale dress rehearsals with a judging panel and live band.

BBC bosses forced the stars to sign strict NDAs to keep the tryouts under wraps and are hoping to announce a decision soon.

Among those confirmed to be in the callbacks were Rylan, Emma, Tom Allen and Alex.

The Beeb has recently given an insight into what fans can expect for the 24th series of the much-loved programme.

The likes of Dianne Buswell, 37, Nancy Xu, 34, Vito Coppola, 33, Julian Caillon, 30, Carlos Gu, 33, Lauren Oakley, 35, Amy Dowden, 35, Katya Jones, 36, Neil Jones, 44, Nikita Kuzmin, 28, Jowita Przystał, 31, Johannes Radebe, 39, Aljaž Škorjanec, 36, Alexis Warr, 25, and Kai Widdrington, 30, will be returning to the dance floor this year.

They will be joined by some professional dancers who are yet to be announced.

It comes after Karen Hauer, 43, Gorka Marquez, 35, Nadiya Bychkova, 36, Michelle Tsiakkas, 30, and Luba Mushtuk, 36, were all given the boot.

The celebrities will be judged by Shirley Ballas, 65, Craig Revel Horwood, 61, Motsi Mabuse, 45, and Anton du Beke, 59.

And some of the themes returning each week will include Movies, Icons, Halloween and Musicals, as well as the annual visit to the Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

But unfortunately viewers will also have to wait a little bit longer to find out which famous faces have decided to sign up to the show this year.

Claudia recently hinted that Strictly Come Dancing's 'glitz and glamour had started to wear off' for her and co-host Tess.

The BBC presenter, 54, quit the hit BBC competition last year after 13 years alongside Tess, 57, who was a host for 21 years.

Asked by Closer magazine if the glitz and glamour had started to wear off for them both, she replied: 'It's not that I wasn't excited at the end, but both of us were a bit like, "Oh yeah cool. All right, so then I do that..."'

Claudia also recalled fearing her TV career was 'over' when she was offered The Traitors hosting gig.

'Traitors was not supposed to be what it was. I remember phoning my husband and saying, "I think it's over",' she admitted.

'They sent me the Dutch version to watch and I was told to take a risk,' she said. 'I am incredibly lucky.'
