A Texas judicial candidate facing down a crucial primary runoff election is married to a registered sex offender who assaulted one of her relatives, court records have revealed.
Christina Montes, 44, is a Democratic candidate running for judge of County Court at Law No. 2 in El Paso.
Court records viewed by the Daily Mail showed that her husband, 44-year-old Juan Manuel Montes, is required to register as a sex offender for life.
Juan Manuel was charged with indecency with a child by contact and sexual performance by a child over a 2011 incident that involved a 12-year-old female, who according to El Paso Matters, is a relative of Montes.
Mr. Montes took a plea deal in 2013, and the charges were dropped in 2020 after he completed seven years of community supervision.
However, he is still required to update his information on the Texas sex offender registry four times a year.
Notably, the local newspaper found that the judge who approved the plea deal, 171st District Judge Bonnie Rangel, who is retiring this year, donated $150 to Montes' campaign.
Manuel Montes was also among a group of 'bounty hunters' working for the company 9ONE5 Bail Bonds arrested in 2018 after they were accused of kidnapping a woman and child in an effort to get a person on bond to turn themselves in, court records showed.

The charges connected to the kidnapping case were later dropped due to insufficient evidence, El Paso Matters reported.
Court records indicate that Mrs. Montes represented 9ONE5 Bail Bonds in a lawsuit over the incident.
Mr. Montes has an arrest record that dates back to 1998 for charges including possession of a prohibited weapon, robbery and forgery that were all dismissed.
Records state that the couple married in 2006, and according to Montes' Facebook page she is a mother of six.
The couple has been previously charged with contributing to non-attendance after the children acquired a significant number of unexcused absences at school.
Montes is also facing a lawsuit from her previous landlord of the building that housed her law office over breach of contact.
She obtained her law degree from the now defunct Whittier College School of Law in 2018, and passed the Texas State Bar in 2019.
She operates her own law firm, Montes Law Firm, which specializes in criminal, family and immigration law.
