Inside story of how serial rapist, aged only 20, was brought to justice: 'Bullied schoolboy' is unmasked as monster behind three sex attacks - as victim-blaming comment to cops catches him out
2026-05-18 · via News | Mail Online

A 20-year-old man has been found guilty of raping an 18-year-old woman in a secluded forest and molesting two 13-year-old girls.

Kobi Shaw, 20, fronted the Melbourne County Court on Monday after a jury found him guilty of raping and sexually assaulting the 18-year-old in the Canadian State Forest, near Ballarat, earlier this year.

The court heard that Shaw - who appeared via videolink from the city's notorious sex offender prison, Hopkins Correctional Centre - was unemployed and 'bullied' as a schoolboy for being bad at sport.

The victim initially agreed to jump in Shaw's car for a 'catch up', the court heard, but her assailant then repeatedly begged the young woman for sex.

The victim said she felt 'pressured' and had 'no choice' but to submit to Shaw's vile demands, and he raped his victim twice in a secluded part of the forest.

She said she felt in danger and wanted to run away but the victim, who the court heard was 'quite a small person', felt trapped.

The victim spent almost two days in the witness box as the jury boiled their decision down to whether she consented to sex or Shaw raped her.

Shaw ultimately dug his own grave after the jury heard that he told police during a taped interview that he 'didn't believe 'the victim wanted to (have sex)'.

The forest is known for being secluded

'There was just a feeling of unease, like she didn't want to but was hiding the fact that she didn't want to, which is why I was asking her if she wanted to,' Shaw told sex crime detectives.

Shaw, who was found guilty of the Canadian Forest rape earlier this year, was already on bail for sexual offending against two teenage schoolgirls, it was revealed in court on Monday - something the jury would have had no idea of.

The court heard Shaw was trawling Snapchat for '13 and 14-year-old girls' to have sex with and violated two child victims multiple times between August 2023 and January 2024.

Shaw lured his first victim via Snapchat before driving the 13-year-old schoolgirl to a farm paddock where he sexually violated her.

The victim had clearly stated on social media she was aged 13 at the time.

She said his unwanted sexual attack 'hurt' and demanded Shaw to stop.

'Please take me home,' the traumatised victim begged her assailant.

The court heard the victim returned home and cried after Shaw's vile attack.

Shaw, who was 18 at the time, contacted the victim again in September and told the child to 'try sex the next time' but she countered saying she only wanted to hang out as 'normal people'.

Shaw lured the child to the Buninyong Skatepark after he asked the victim: 'Please, can we try and have sex?'

The fiend led the victim by hand to the toilet block where he violated her without wearing a condom.

Shaw violated the child a third time after he encountered her at a Wendouree house party later that month.

The victim arrived at the party and drank alcohol which led her to become unsteady on her feet and she 'vomited profusely'.

The court heard the victim could barely walk and passed out in a 'drunken state' in a bed. She woke to find Shaw undressing her before he sexually violated her.

'I don't want to do this,' the victim said before passing out.

A woman barged in and rescued the victim from Shaw's clutches.

Shaw sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl following a NYE party in January 2024

The victim told her family what happened before reporting Shaw to police.

Shaw, who was arrested in May 2024, initially denied sexually penetrating the victim and knowing she was only 13 - but eventually admitted his grubby conduct.

The serial sex offender also told police he had been communicating via social media with various other children with the intention of sex.

Shaw, who pleaded guilty to sexual assault and sexual penetration of a child under 16, was caught violating another 13-year-old schoolgirl he lured via Snapchat.

Shaw cornered the girl at his home after she went there in the company of one of the offender's friends.

Shaw, his friend and the victim watched a movie before he lured the girl to a bathroom where he forcibly violated the child.

The victim yelled 'stop' but Shaw covered her mouth with his hand before he finished his vile sexual attack.

The child begged to be taken home so Shaw, in the company of his friend, drove the girl to a public street where he dropped her off in the dark alone.

The court heard Shaw was unemployed

The girl cried on the way home, the court was told.

Shaw sexually assaulted the victim again following a NYE party in January 2024.

The victim provided a statement and topless photos Shaw had sent her via Snapchat to police later that month.

Sex crime investigators hauled Shaw in for questioning where he initially denied the offending while attempting to blame the victim.

Shaw told police the victim begged to perform a lewd act but he told her no, because he 'didn't like that'.

He eventually admitted his vile offending.

Crown prosecutor Andrew Buckland said all the victims have 'similarities in their vulnerabilities' and Shaw knew the children were 13 years old.

'Just dealing with the children, clearly the offending against each victim was not spontaneous, it was pre-planned and the offender's effectively treated his victims of little more than objects for his own gratification,' prosecutor Buckland said.

The dense bush land offers up an isolated feeling about the park

'These particular offences span a period of four months, and the Crown would categorise this offending as predatory.

'Grooming 14-year-old girls is what he said in the interview but these two [victims] are 13, via Snapchat with the intention of meeting them for sexual penetrative and saying he got a 'thrill' from his contact, knowing it was illegal to engage with underage girls.'

He also said the offending would 'clearly have lasting effects' on the child victims.

Mr Buckland said the offending against the children involved 'planning' for 'sexual penetrations'.

'It's quite clear these penetrations were unprotected as well which could be another aggravated feature.'

Mr Buckland said the 18-year-old rape victim was 'clearly a young woman who was very vulnerable'.

'She is quite a small person, not able to articulate herself very well also...,' he said.

'It was dark, it was certainly some time between 5:30 and 6:30pm in July, not long after the shortest day of the year.

Shaw took his rape victim to a secluded part of the Canadian State Forest

'There was obviously no one else at that location... she was clearly very much pressured... at the very least he didn't have a reasonable belief the complainant was consenting to the sexual acts which took place in the backseat of the car...

'He had little regard to the wishes of [the victim], he treated her as an object for sexual gratification.'

The rape victim submitted an impact statement to the court but it wasn't read aloud.

However, Mr Buckland said the victim described the 'painful feelings she's had' and her loss of 'security'.

Judge Sarah Dawes will sentence Shaw early next month, just days before he turns 21.
