England's official World Cup portraits whipped up a social media frenzy today as fans compared them to 90s school pictures, in memoriam funeral photos and portraits of Princess Diana. 

Supporters said Anthony Gordon again resembled the late Princess of Wales after the £70million Barcelona star's official portrait was taken in Florida earlier this week.

Newcastle fan Kendall Rowan tweeted: 'He has never looked more Princess Di.' Another X user called him 'Anthony Gordiana' and a third added: 'Prince Anthony.'

Another posted a black and white version of Gordon's photograph, writing: 'We all know she had her moments but Nanna was an unforgettable woman. We'll be holding a small memorial service for her this Friday at Kirkdale Community Centre.'

A further post containing Gordon's image said: 'The sort of photo your mates clock on the wall at your parents' house and becomes the group chat pic for four years.'

Gordon was previously compared to Diana last October when fans claimed he was copying her signature blonde bob and slicked back look with a similar headband.

Others poked fun at an image of Reece James standing up straight while showing no emotion, with one saying: 'Come and show your Nanna your new football kit!'

Another tweeted James's photo, saying: 'This was the exact expression on my son's face on his first day at school when he realised that I couldn't stay with him.'

Dan Burn looking pensive also caught the imagination, with one social media user posting his photo and saying: ' 'I think, therefore I am' - Daniel Burn (circa 2026).'

The unusual images were taken by American photographer Carmen Mandato for Getty Images on Monday ahead of the tournament beginning yesterday.

The England squad had their portraits done during a session in Palm Beach, where they have been based to play two Florida friendlies in warm weather preparation.

Other unusual photos showed Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane looking bored and Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson with a strange stare into the camera.

One fan said: 'The new England team portraits are out, and for some reason Dean Henderson looks like he's seen things that would keep you up at night in several of them.'

Arsenal's sunburnt Declan Rice appeared to be nursing a neck problem in his photo - and addressed his red face in an interview with the BBC earlier this week.

Asked when he knew he had begun to acclimatise in the hot conditions in Florida, he said 'when the sunburnt went', adding: 'I think everyone's seen them photos... I was bright red at that photoshoot, my mum was killing me.'

England closed their Florida training camp with a behind-closed-doors friendly yesterday and will have a rest before heading to Kansas City.

The team managed by Thomas Tuchel won 1-0 on Saturday in a friendly against New Zealand in Tampa followed by a 3-0 victory against Costa Rica on Wednesday.

England begin against Croatia in Dallas on June 17 at 9pm UK time, then play Ghana in Boston on June 23 again at 9pm and Panama in New Jersey on June 27 at 10pm.

Fans of the Three Lions are hoping their journey will finish in glory on July 19 by ending 60 years of hurt and winning the World Cup for the first time since 1966.
