Ohio mom, 28, who shocked America by brawling at kinderga...
Alyssa Guzman · 2026-05-27 · via News | Mail Online

An Ohio mother who got into a shocking brawl at a kindergarten graduation ceremony insisted she is not to blame for the massive fight, as she unveiled a dramatically different new look.

Jessica Anderson, 28, of Toledo, was charged with felonious assault after she was allegedly caught on camera swinging at another parent at Queen of Apostles School on May 21.

'I wasn’t the aggressor,' Anderson insisted to ABC 13, while wearing an innocent look of all white turtleneck, oversized glasses, and simple earrings.

The prim and proper look seemed miles away from the woman who police say was filmed grabbing another parent by the hair in the middle of a graduation brawl.

She kept her makeup simple and her hair tied in a messy bun as she defended her honor in a softly spoken tone.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Anderson said it wasn't her face and name that should have been elevated over everyone else involved in the brawl, 'based off one side of a story'.

'I have five kids,' Anderson said. 'And being blasted all over the internet as some violent person has been extremely damaging when that’s not the full context of what happened.

'I’m taking the legal process seriously, and that’s all I really have to say right now.'

Jessica Anderson, 28, of Toledo, appeared to be the picture of innocence after she was charged last week with felonious assault for being involved in a brawl at a kindergarten graduation

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Anderson said it wasn't her face and name that should have been elevated over everyone else involved 'based off one side of a story'

Video from inside the event showed Anderson, pictured in white and black, gripping another mother's hair during the fight that involved several families

Anderson also insisted to ABC 13 that she had 'removed' the other mother from the pile of people during the fight and then the woman's 'arm fell into a chair.'

'We were surrounded by people, and she was hitting me,' she told the outlet. 'I didn’t know what was happening, so I started swinging back.

'I take accountability that I was involved. A lot of people were involved, but me being the only person charged was not fair. It wasn’t.'

Video obtained by ABC 13 from inside the gymnasium celebration showed a group of women fighting each other before a woman was taken to the ground by Anderson. The other women began wailing on the mother, who was curled up on the ground.

A different video showed Anderson with her hands gripping a woman's hair as she fell to the ground. The other mother gripped a folding chair as Anderson appeared to be pulling her hair.

As the two struggled and got to a standing position, the other woman threw punches at Anderson's back.

Now, Anderson wants her charges dropped, as she has so far been the only parent to face any legal consequences.

But fellow parent, Craig Mays, insisted to ABC 7 that her family was part of the problem.

'Her whole family in the first two rows just stands up, five guys, five girls just all stand up,' he said, while he was 'arguing with Jessica.'

'I have five kids,' Anderson told the Daily Mail. 'And being blasted all over the internet as some violent person has been extremely damaging when that’s not the full context of what happened'

Anderson was arrested and later released on house arrest

'I literally don’t remember anything. I just know I was sucker-punched. Once I was taken to the ground, it was probably four or five other guys on top of me trampling me, punching me, kicking me in the head,' he insisted.

Additional cell phone footage appeared to show Mays taking off his t-shirt and squaring up with another male attendee after the initial brawl.

The video showed Mays walking quickly toward a family. Anderson could be seen rushing after him, her phone pressed to her ear as she called 911, she said.

Mays previously said that another family had begun gathering chairs to make their own seating section, which caused his daughter's mother not to be able to see the stage, causing the confrontation.

Anderson had been seated behind the Mays family.

'The girl behind me, she's just talking, just cussing, talking crazy,' Mays told WTVG. 'Calling us weird and saying we need to mind our business.'

After a brief argument, Mays said that's when Anderson's family of ten suddenly attacked them.

Mays, who is a kindergarten teacher, said the attack prompted his daughter's mother to intervene and begin fighting with Anderson.

'She grabbed my kid's mom by her hair, pulled her away from me, started punching her face then maybe five or six other girls came and trampled her and were just stomping her, kicking her in the face,' Mays added.

The mother of Mays' daughter was taken to the emergency room for treatment, he added.

Craig Mays, another parent, was also involved in the brawl and he said Anderson's family was a main part of the problem

Mays can be seen getting held back by a woman (left) and shirtless later in the fight (right). Mays said another family began making their own seating section, making it hard for his daughter's mother to see, which caused the confrontation

So far, Anderson is the only parent to face any charges from the Queen of Apostles School brawl

'She got staples in her head. She was bleeding. Her wrist is pretty messed up. Both her knees are pretty bad,' Mays said. 'It was a very bad day for my family.'

Anderson was arrested, charged with felonious assault, and taken to the Lucas County Jail. She was later released on house arrest.

Mays said he is now considering pulling his daughter out of the school after the incident.

'I probably won't send my daughter back there next year,' he told WTOL. 'Just based on this situation.'

The Queen of Apostles School is a Catholic school with 120 students, which touts itself as being 'especially dedicated to serving the Hispanic population of its neighborhood.'

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Toledo Police Department, the school, and the diocese for comment.
