A knife-wielding man remains on the run after he allegedly smashed a car into a home in Melbourne's southeast and repeatedly stabbed a woman.

Police warned the 'potentially armed' suspect may also be responsible for another alleged stabbing hours earlier in Melbourne's north.

In the second incident, a woman aged in her 30s was inside an Exner Street home in Dandenong North with her mother at about 10.15am on Sunday when a man allegedly rammed a stolen car into the brick house.

Neighbours ran outside after hearing the crash and found the man sitting in the driver's seat of the silver Honda CRV.

'I went over to check if he was okay, then he just got out of the car and went inside,' one woman told the Herald Sun.

The man allegedly stabbed the woman, who walked out a short time later covered in blood from multiple wounds to her upper body.

'She walked out holding her side with a knife in her other hand,' the neighbour said.

Police allege the man then entered the home and stabbed his sister multiple times

They said the alleged stabber then 'walked outside and walked down the road. He didn't even run.'

Neighbours stemmed the woman's bleeding until paramedics arrived.

The injured woman was taken to Dandenong Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as police established a crime scene.

It is understood that the woman's mother was not injured.

Police believe the incident is linked to another alleged stabbing which occurred three hours earlier at an Epping home in Melbourne's north.

A man aged in his 40s was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police allege both incidents were targeted and the suspect was known to his victims.

The alleged attacker remains on the run. Southern Metro Region Inspector Graham Higginbotham confirmed the suspect, described as being of African appearance, is known to police.

'We are aware of the male's identity and are in the process of looking for this male,' he told reporters.

Inspector Higginbotham urged the community to remain vigilant.

'We don't know if the offender is armed in any way, but we are treating that person as potentially being armed,' he said.

The suspect was last seen wearing a brown shirt and black pants and may still be armed.

Authorities have urged the public not to approach the man but to call triple-0 immediately if they spot him.

Police urge anyone who witnessed either incident, or has CCTV or dashcam footage, to contact Crime Stoppers.
