A lawn flanked by tiny ceramic figurines does not sound like the hallmark of a tastefully appointed garden.
However, garden gnomes are having a moment after the Chelsea Flower Show lifted its ban on the ornaments for only the second time in its 113-year history.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, a furniture trends expert has revealed that these outdoor decorations actually offer insights into what a homeowner values and what their personality is like.
'For years I thought garden gnomes were something you either inherited from a relative and then hid behind or shoved in a shed. But lately I've noticed them creeping back in, and not just in a wink wink ironic way either,' Victoria Robinson, product manager at Hillarys, said.
'People seem much happier admitting they like things that make them smile, even if they're not conventionally considered to be good taste or stylish.
'I've seen it in my own home too, the more relaxed you become about perfection, the nicer a space feels to live in.
'Homes where there's a gnome in the garden are often the same ones where guests put their feet up or don't have to take their shoes off at the door, children are welcome, they have pets and nothing feels too precious. It's less about good taste and more about good vibes.'
From the gnome that reveals you're more self conscious than you let on to the one that signals an owner who hates change, Victoria has revealed what every kind of gnome may reveal about your personality...
Tall, short, cheap or expensive, it's likely that most British gardens will be housing a gnome - but what do they reveal about your personality? Stock image used
CLASSIC RED HAT GNOME
If you have a classic gnome, wearing the traditional red hat and simple outfit, 'you're the kind of person who prefers reliability over novelty', Victoria said.
'If something works, you don't see the point in changing it,' she continued.
'You value routine and familiarity, like roast dinners on a Sunday, a well worn jumper, enjoy a crossword and have "your programmes" on the TV.
'You're not easily swayed by trends, are dependable, steady, maybe a tad predictable, and quietly resistant to unnecessary change.
VERDICT: DEPENDABLE
A WEATHERED GNOME THAT HAS SEEN BETTER DAYS
Victoria explained that if your gnome may be in some need of TLC, it's possible that 'you get emotionally attached to objects in a way that goes beyond practicality'.
'You see character in wear and tear, and you prefer things that have meaning rather than looking perfect,' she added.
'You're the kind of person who can tell you exactly where something came from and what was happening in your life when you got it. You don't just keep things, you keep their stories.'
VERDICT: SENTIMENTAL
GNOME COUPLE
If you don't like your gnome being lonely, Victoria said you 'prefer a calm, steady relationship above anything dramatic'.
Above all else, you probably prioritise 'consistency, shared routines and knowing where you stand with people'.
'Big emotional gestures aren't your style, you show care through small gestures and always being on time and reliable,' she continued.
'You're the kind of person who values companionship as something built quietly over time, and certainly not played out on social channels.'
VERDICT: SUBTLE
A GNOME WITH A JOB (FISHERMAN, GOLFER, GARDENER...)
If you're hobby-oriented, your gnome probably has a job.
Victoria explained: 'You're defined in part by what you love doing. Your hobbies are not background detail, they're part of your identity.
'You don't mind being 'the gardening one' or 'the golf one' because it gives people a clear read on you.
'You're usually happiest when you're in a place you'd confidently call your "proper" or "happy" space.'
VERDICT: AMBITIOUS
CHEEKY GNOME
Victoria said that quirky, fun-loving gardeners will probably have a gnome that is just as mischievous.
'Socially playful and perhaps a bit disruptive by nature,' she revealed.
'You don't take things too seriously, especially when the talk is getting a bit too serious.
'You enjoy humour that tests boundaries just enough to get a reaction, and you're often the one easing tension with something unexpected.
'You're also very often the person who claims they don't like garden ornaments and then immediately buys the most outrageous one available.'
VERDICT: PLAYFUL
A GNOME WITH ANIMALS
The expert said that those whose gnomes have animals are gentle souls.
'You're a soft hearted observer of the small details in life,' she shared. 'You notice what's around you and respond to things with quiet affection.
'Gentle, attentive, and more emotionally aware than you often show.'
VERDICT: SENSITIVE
SEASONAL GNOME (CHRISTMAS, EASTER, HALLOWEEN)
A seasonal gnome doesn't just show great organisation skills, Victoria explained.
She added: 'You're someone who finds comfort in marking time. You like structure, rhythm and small rituals that signal change, taking decorations out, putting them away, resetting the space.
'You're organised in a quiet way, and you take satisfaction in things feeling right for the moment. You're the kind of person who uses seasons as emotional anchors without necessarily saying so.'
VERDICT: ORGANISED
YOGA GNOME
These days gnomes come in all sorts of shapes and sizes - including practicing yoga and meditation.
'You're actively trying to create and show calm in a busy, slightly chaotic life. You're drawn to balance, even if you don't always achieve it,' Victoria said.
'You buy into the idea of mindfulness and aspire to peace even if you don't have time to practice it.'
VERDICT: SERENE
'COOL' GNOME WITH SUNGLASSES
If your gnome is sporting some shades or striking a 'chill' pose - you're probably more conscious of how you appear than you seem.
'You're into how things look but like to downplay it,' Victoria said. 'You like things that appear effortless but you've actually spent ages creating that "tousled" hair look or nonchalant outfit.
'You may have bought this ironically, but at some point it stopped being a joke and became something you genuinely liked.'
VERDICT: IMAGE-CONSCIOUS
CLIMBING OR HANGING GNOME
Gnomes that are crawling or hanging around the garden rather than stood firmly in the ground show the owner's playful nature.
Victoria said these are for people who are 'playful, slightly restless, and drawn to disruption in small doses'.
'You're often the instigator of ideas that begin with "this will be funny" and enjoy the reactions that follow,' she added.
'Your personality type is lightly chaotic in a deliberate way. You add humour and unpredictability wherever you can.'
VERDICT: UNPREDICTABLE
HIDDEN/ PEEKING GNOME
A more hidden away gnome signals a subtle - but impactful - presence.
'You're understated in your humour and selective about attention,' Victoria said.
'You prefer subtle jokes over obvious statements, and you enjoy the satisfaction of people noticing things on their own.
'You don't need to be the centre of attention, but you do like the moment when someone "gets it". Observant and intentionally low key in your appearance.'
VERDICT: INTENTIONAL
