Embattled LA Mayor Karen Bass spotted with Donald Trump G...
2026-04-24 · via News | Mail Online

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass left the White House with more than what she bargained for after heading to The Hill to beg President Trump for wildfire recovery money.

The scandal-scarred mayor was seen toting a Trump goodie bag that was packed to the brim with all sorts of MAGA merchandise as she exited 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

The LA fires in January 2025 was the most destructive blaze in the city's history and burned down more than 6,800 homes and buildings across Southern California.

Bass, who is running for reelection this year, and LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger met with the commander in chief on Wednesday to discuss recovery funding amid a standoff with leaders over the federal government's role in the efforts.

'This afternoon, we met with President Trump and Administration officials to advocate for families who lost everything,' the LA officials said in a joint statement.

'We had a very positive discussion about FEMA and other rebuilding funds, as well as the support of the President to continue joining us in pressuring the insurance companies to pay what they owe – and for the big banks to step up to ease the financial pressure on LA families.'

'Our job is to fight for our communities. When it comes to this recovery, our federal partners are essential, and we are grateful for the support of the President,' she added.

Former reality TV star Spencer Pratt, who is in the running to replace Bass, shared photos of her leaving the White House with a staffer who appeared to be holding a bag with Trump's signature on it.

'Look at the MAGA merch! Karen Bass sold her soul to Trump in a last ditch desperation move ahead of the election LMAO,' Pratt wrote on X.

Trump has reportedly given out similarly signed merchandise bags to guests at other events.

The White House Historical Association, which operates the gift shops inside the White House, told the Daily Mail they do not have any information regarding the merchandise or Bass's visit.

The Daily Mail contacted the White House, Bass and Barger's offices for comment.

Bass is facing a primary election in June and is under pressure after her handling of the fires.

The mayor did not share details about the specifics of her conversation with Trump, but indicated that progress is being made.

'I think what's important is that we certainly got the president's support in terms of, you know, what is needed, and then the appropriate people were in the room for us to follow up. And that was Russ Vought, who is the head of the Office of Management and budget,' she told KNX.

Pratt, 42, announced his campaign in January following a slew of public criticism of Bass over her handling of the massive wildfires at the start of 2025.

His unlikely political career followed years on television, including the hit MTV series, The Hills, where he met his wife Heidi Montag.

However, a recent poll conducted by the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs suggests that Pratt's long-shot campaign may not be a long shot after all.

The poll still has Bass in the lead, with 25 percent of participants saying they plan to vote for her in the June primary.

Pratt came in second, with 11 percent of respondents saying they intended to vote for him in June.

Nithya Raman, a city council member and longtime Bass ally, came in a close third, receiving 9 percent of participants' support.

Rae Chen Huang, a pastor and housing advocate, and Adam Miller, a nonprofit executive and entrepreneur, tied for fourth with 3 percent. Nine percent of participants said they planned to vote for a different candidate.

Pratt is running as an independent. Los Angeles has a unique voting structure where the top two candidates in the primary run against one another in a November runoff.

However, if a candidate receives more than 50 percent of the votes in June, they win the election, and there is no runoff in the fall.

Bass won the election comfortably four years ago, but is facing an uphill battle this time around as her approval rating has plummeted.
