The ‘treasured and enduring bonds of the United Kingdom’ have been highlighted by the leader of the Scottish Conservatives during a visit to a historic landmark of the Union.
On Thursday, Russell Findlay stepped up his plea to voters to stop an SNP majority and another independence referendum as he visited the Union Bridge on the border between Scotland and England near Fishwick as part of his tour of ‘blue wall’ seats.
He said: ‘The magnificent Union Bridge represents the treasured and enduring bonds of the United Kingdom.
‘For his entire adult life, John Swinney has been hellbent on destroying those bonds. If he wins a majority next week, he will immediately demand another independence referendum.

‘Voters living in the Scottish Conservative blue wall spanning the south of Scotland have the power to stop Swinney.
‘Winning the three seats I’ve campaigned in over the last two days was key to stopping an SNP majority in 2016 and 2021. We can do it again.’
SNP leader John Swinney will focus on independence during a stump speech in Stirling tomorrow.
He will say: ‘We want to bring down people’s bills with the fresh start of independence – and other parties want to stop us.
‘And we want to give people the choice over their future – and the other parties want to stand in Scotland's way.
‘They want people to vote for an opposition to stop things happening, I am asking people to vote for an SNP Government to get things done.’
