The former partner of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis killed himself on his birthday after facing criminal charges for attacking the lawmaker.
Danny Curran was found dead in his apartment in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Thursday morning following an apparent suicide, police said.
The tragedy came a day after Curran, who turned 35 on Thursday, appeared in court to face charges for a domestic violence incident against the mayor last year.
The pair had begun a relationship in March 2025, and they were briefly engaged, with the stark age gap to the 72-year-old mayor drawing headlines.
Their engagement broke down that September as Trantalis took out a domestic violence injunction against Curran, but Curran violated the order and showed up at the mayor's home to reconnect weeks later.
Police said Curran was insistent on getting back together, and on November 1, 2025 he allegedly attacked the mayor outside his home.
According to his arrest affidavit, Curran pushed Trantalis to the ground and dragged him over 15 feet across a roadway as they fought over their relationship.
The affidavit said Trantalis, a Democrat first elected as mayor of Fort Lauderdale in 2018, suffered injuries to his wrist, leg, and knee.

Curran was charged with battery on a person 65 or older, contempt of court, and violating an injunction.
Trantalis accused Curran in court filings for the domestic violence injunction of repeatedly assaulting him during their relationship.
He said Curran threw things at him in a rage, brandished knives and hurled furniture, and said he tried to force the mayor out of his own home.
The Democrat testified in court that he stayed with Curran at the time because he thought there was 'some way to rehabilitate' his much younger boyfriend, saying they had been 'trying to reconnect.'
Trantalis said even after he and Curran broke up, he was trying to 'steer him into counseling and mental health treatment.'
When Curran was released two days after his arrest, he reportedly said he was still intent on rekindling things with the mayor.
'No matter what, I always have and will love him,' Curran said at the time, per the New York Post.
The couple's domestic violence case was heard in court on Wednesday, where Trantalis defended his former fiancé and told the court Curran was no longer a threat.
The judge in the case allowed their no-contact order to be remedied so they could communicate digitally, reports Local10.
The couple were briefly engaged from July to September 2025 before the alleged domestic violence incident
