Moment killer tries to throw rookie police officer off ba...

This is the terrifying moment a killer tried to throw a rookie police officer off a balcony after hitting her in the head with a bottle for saving his life.

Guy Pottle was jailed for ten and a half years today after violently attacking PC Beer with a glass bottle, beating her in the face and attempting to throw her head first from a building.

Pottle was standing on the wrong side of the railings on the first floor of a property in Newton Abbot, Devon, in February this year, when PC Alice Beer was called out to stop him from jumping to his death.

Police bodycam footage showed her rushing up the stairs to get to Pottle from behind the railing.

She quickly grabbed his right arm and saved his life but did not realise he was holding a glass bottle in his other hand.

The 39-year-old then smashed PC Beer round the head with the bottle partially blinding her in her right eye.

As PC Beer clutched her eye Pottle clambered back over the railings, grabbed her by the legs and hoisted her over the metal rails.

Fearing that she was going to die, she fought her way off the edge of the balcony before Pottle viciously beat her in the face and head - as blood spatters covered the camera.

PC Beer, who was just months into her dream job in the police, managed to spray Pottle with incapacitant spray before he threw himself off the balcony to the ground and was arrested.

Pottle said that he had downed a 1.5 litre bottle of vodka and could not remember attacking PC Beer with a bottle or attempting to throw her head first off the balcony. Pictured: PC Beer tries to get Pottle back over the railing

She said: 'He was trying to kill me or seriously hurt me. I thought I am going to die. I was really scared.'

In a victim impact statement, PC Beer said she now suffers from PTSD, flashbacks and nightmares and fears she may have to leave her 'dream job' after the attack.

Harrowing bodycam footage of the attack was shown in court which Judge James Patrick said was 'chilling'.

Pottle said that he had downed a 1.5 litre bottle of vodka and could not remember attacking PC Beer with a bottle or attempting to throw her head first off the balcony.

Defending Pottle, Lee Brembridge said that while there was 'a lot to dislike about' him, he was the victim of childhood sexual violence and has ADHD.

The judge said: 'You are an extremely dangerous man and the public needs to be protected from you.'

Commending PC Beer's bravery he said: 'She came to your help motivated by simply trying to do the best to help you' and that the effects on her were 'devastating'.

Pottle was jailed for ten years and six months for GBH with intent, three years for wounding PC Beer and five years for being a dangerous offender.

But this is not the first depraved crime Guy Pottle has committed.

Pottle killed 40-year-old Anthony Moore with a single punch to the head just two days after he was released from jail on June 30, 2018.

Pottle had said Mr Moore angered him when he took a swig from his bottle of wine after they had spent the day socialising with friends at the Respect Festival in Exeter, Devon.

At around 10.40pm Pottle was seen drinking from outside Tesco Metro in Exeter High Street, and Mr Moore snatched the bottle from him to take a swig, Devon Live reported.

Pottle snatched it back and punched Mr Moore in the face, sending him crashing to the pavement unconscious while his girlfriend Amy Tatum consoled him.

After striking his victim with a single 'haymaker', Pottle walked away with the bottle as Ms Tatum knelt crying beside her boyfriend.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and took Mr Moore to hospital, but he died on July 9 after suffering bleeding to the brain.

He denied manslaughter but was convicted and sentenced to six years in prison.

Pottle had previously served a four year sentence for attacking a friend with a machete in 2014 and was said to have a long history of violence.
