An award-winning animator who worked on the blockbuster hit Spider-Man has died after being hit by a train.

Luis de la Rosa, 34, was attending the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France when he was struck by a train on Wednesday. He died instantly.

Local newspaper Le Dauphiné Libéré reported that a man in his 30s was hit after straying close to railway tracks running alongside a ring road.

The driver had spotted him near the edge of the tracks and sounded the horn to warn him of the train's approach.

Emergency services were called by the conductor of the local Léman Express service at around 8pm local time.

Despite their best efforts, paramedics were unable to save the victim's life.

The newspaper reported that the victim had been wearing accreditation for the prestigious animation festival.

It later emerged through social media posts and specialist animation blogs that the victim was 34-year-old animator Luis de la Rosa, who was also credited professionally as Luis de la Rosa Obregón.

A police investigation has been opened to further determine the exact cause of de la Rosa's death.

The area where he was killed is secured by a fence and off-limits to pedestrians, according to reports.

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival confirmed the 'tragic' death to Deadline.

Festival organisers also revealed artistic director Marcel Jean will offer his condolences during Saturday's closing ceremony.

According to an Instagram post, de la Rosa had been attending Annecy's MIFA market with his original project, Ash Raider World.

The gifted animator was born and raised in Mexico before building his career in Vancouver, Canada.

He graduated with honours from Vancouver Film School.

According to his LinkedIn profile, he worked for a string of animation and gaming studios after graduating in 2015.

His successful career included roles at Titmouse Inc., Petty Karma and Deluxe Animation.

De la Rosa also earned credits on acclaimed productions including Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and My Little Pony: The Movie.
