Family of young housekeeper who plunged 15 floors to her death reveal the troubling scene when they finally saw her body - as dozens march through Sydney demanding answers
Maisy Rae · 2026-06-02 · via News | Mail Online

Family and friends of a young housekeeper who plunged 15 floors to her death at a Sydney hotel have revealed her body barely had a scratch when they saw it two days later.

Kenyan Sheila Jepkorir Chebii, 25, died at lunchtime on May 17 after falling from the 19th floor of the Meriton Suites on Sussex Street in Sydney's CBD.

Ms Chebii, who was living with cousins in Greystanes in Sydney's west, had arrived in Australia six weeks earlier and was working at the 32-storey tower when she fell to her death.

But when her next-of-kin were finally allowed to see her body 48 hours later, they were amazed to discover it showed almost no signs of the catastrophic fall.

'When we heard she'd fallen from the 19th floor, everybody was prepared to see a shattered body,' said friend Chepchir Chir, part of the Sydney Kenyan community.

'But when we got there, the body was intact. No fractures, no shattered skull, nothing. She was just peaceful.'

As speculation mounts around the circumstances of the tragedy, Ms Chebii's supporters told the Daily Mail her death deserves a thorough investigation.

Ms Chir said many questions remain unanswered, as dozens within the Kenyan community took to the streets of Sydney on Tuesday to call for a full probe.

The Daily Mail understands Ms Chebii was working as a housekeeper at the hotel

Chepchir Chir knew Ms Chebii through the Kenyan diaspora in Sydney and said many questions surrounding her death remain unanswered

'Why did it take so long for Sheila's employer to contact her family? They called around two days [after] - what happened?' Ms Chir said.

'We want to know what happened on the 19th floor, in the room she was in - was there a client in there? Is there anything that client saw?

'Has the person who identified (Sheila's) body on the fourth floor been questioned, because that is a very critical witness?

'It's been 16 days and there's been nothing in the news. If you see a drunk driver hitting a car, it'd be all over the news.

'But a young girl fell from the 19th floor and no one knows about it. That is so wrong.'

Ms Chir said the group also wants authorities to investigate whether Ms Chebii's death was a workplace incident, and whether SafeWork NSW was contacted.

'She didn't show up at home and then police called her next-of-kin but they didn't give permission for her family to go and see the body to identify her,' she added.

'It was quite a struggle. They ruled it immediately as a self-harm.'

The Kenyan national had moved to Australia just six weeks before her tragic death

Dozens marched through the streets of Sydney on Tuesday to pay their respects to Ms Chebii

They gathered outside the Meriton Suites hotel where she died and prayed for answers

Around 50 people gathered for the 'Justice for Sheila Chebii' march near the scene of the tragedy at Meriton Suites before walking towards the hotel, chanting her name.

The protesters wore white and traditional Kenyan attire as a symbol of unity and support, as they called on authorities to provide transparency on the investigation.

They also called for greater safety for Kenyans living abroad.

Emergency services were called to the hotel at 1.30pm where they found Ms Chebii's body on a fourth-floor balcony.

'Staff attempted CPR until the arrival of emergency personnel, but the woman died at the scene,' NSW Police told the Daily Mail on Monday.

'Officers attached to Sydney City Police Area Command have conducted inquiries and will prepare a report for the information of the coroner.'

Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

But her devastated family told local media they spoke to her by phone just minutes earlier, around 12.30pm, and she gave them no indication anything was amiss.

Questions have been raised in Kenya's parliament around the circumstances of her death

Supporters chanted her name as they called on authorities to be more transparent

Family members in Sydney have been helped by local community leaders and friends to get access to her body at the coroner's court complex in Lidcombe.

They believe her cause of death is still 'unclear' after they were allegedly told of her relatively minor injuries suffered in the fall.

According to the family, Ms Chebii had 'minimal' injuries, including a 'small injury on the forehead, a dent on one eye, bruises on her arms and an injury on the hip'.

They have now cast doubt on the official version of her death and say they have met police in their search for answers.

'We are distraught because the state of Sheila's body is completely inconsistent with the information given that she fell from the Meriton hotel, level 19 to level 4,' they said in a statement to Kenyan media.

'The family and community remain deeply saddened and emotionally affected by the events surrounding Sheila's passing, and many questions remain unanswered as investigations continue.'

A spokesperson for the Meriton Group told the Daily Mail NSW Police had informed them they are treating Ms Chebii's death as a 'self-harm incident'.

'Meriton was very saddened by this unfortunate incident. We take such matters seriously and give priority to ensuring they are adequately investigated by NSW Police,' the spokesperson said.

Kenya's High Commission, based in Canberra provided an update amid growing discontent among members of the Kenyan diaspora

'Our own inquiries reveal that the person who was involved in this tragic incident was the employee of a subcontractor responsible for cleaning services at one of our hotels.'

Questions have also been asked in Kenya's parliament, with one MP demanding authorities do a 'thorough investigation' into Ms Chebii's death.

'Sheila left Kenya on April 4, 2026. Barely two months after, she was found dead,' said National Assembly member Timothy Toroitich.

'This is a young lady who was carrying the dreams and aspirations of her family.

'So far, there has been no major truth on the death of Sheila...as the government, we have an obligation to protect the lives of our young people.'

Kenya's High Commission, based in Canberra, has since provided the public an update amid growing discontent among Australia's Kenyan community.

A GoFundMe has now been set up to help Ms Chebii's family pay towards any legal and administrative costs, funeral arrangements and the repatriation of her body to Kenya.

'She was a cherished daughter, sister and friend whose kindness and presence deeply impacted all who knew her in both Kenya and Australia,' organiser Elvis Langas said.

'Her sudden passing has left the family devastated emotionally and facing significant financial strain as they navigate this painful loss from afar.

'The family is currently working through ongoing legal and official processes, including awaiting the Coroner’s report to help clarify the circumstances surrounding her passing.'

The fundraiser has already raised over $3,300 of a $12,000 goal.
