An American man has died after being pulled from the water at a northern Sydney beach.
Police say the deceased in his 40s was spear fishing with a 20-year-old known to him when they became caught in a rip.
Emergency services were called to Shelly Beach in Manly at about 2.50pm on Tuesday and found the younger man unconscious.
Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command and NSW Ambulance paramedics performed CPR on the man, but he later died in hospital.
More to come.
