Moment Trump crumbles under pressure in China... as 'alpha' Xi pulls subtle power move
2026-05-16 · via News | Mail Online

When President Donald Trump touched down in Beijing, he wasn't just carrying the weight of American foreign policy - his personal reputation was also at stake.

While Trump attempted to project the image of a 'Sun King of Washington,' body language Judi James suggests the reality on the ground told a different story.

In a series of subtle power plays, it was China's President Xi who emerged as the 'true, fearless alpha,' leaving a subdued Trump looking like a leader whose 'powers are on the decline,' James surmised.

The three-day summit came after a report that Xi views Trump's America as an 'empire in decline,' an eerie assessment from our most menacing rival.

From the outset, Trump appeared to have traded his signature 'ego-purring' and 'dad-dancing' for a new, solemn persona. James notes that Trump managed to put aside his usual 'showboating' in favor of a 'heavyweight statesmanlike demeanor.'

'Trump managed to prove that he is able to walk about slowly, wearing a solemn facial expression to display gravitas,' James observed. This 'gold-ification' of his public image seemed aimed at securing his historical legacy.

However, this restraint may have been a double-edged sword.

By ditching his 'shake and yank' handshake for a more polite, 13-second grip, Trump appeared respectful - but potentially at the cost of his usual dominant energy.

Elon Musk, the 'A-list feather in Trump's cap,' showed an impressive ability to look 'wonderfully unimpressed' by the pomp. James observed Musk rotating 'emphatically with phone held aloft like a tourist' during the greeting ritual

Despite the 'friendship photos' and the presence of 'regal' family members like Lara and Eric Trump - who James described as the President's own 'William and Kate' - the expert noted a distinct lack of genuine connection

'Dressed in a demure ankle-length polka dot dress on arrival and then an encrusted looking cocktail dress later, Lara seemed to have chosen her look from the Princess Catherine style book,' body language expert Judi James tells the Daily Mail

James noted that Trump's supporting cast presented like a group of 'Marvel Superheroes,' each with their own form of body language skills and traits - a stark contrast to their rigid Chinese counterparts.

Elon Musk, the 'A-list feather in Trump's cap,' showed an impressive ability to look 'wonderfully unimpressed' by the pomp. James observed Musk rotating 'emphatically with phone held aloft like a tourist' during the greeting ritual.

At a lavish state banquet Thursday, the world's richest man was caught 'staring at his phone like an unimpressed teenager arrived for dinner at its grandparents,' even puffing out his cheeks and rolling his eyes in 'true rebellious teen style' before gurning for selfies.

Meanwhile, Trump's chief diplomat, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, provided a more 'deadpan' front, hiding his inner feelings with a 'curt clasp and a sharp nod' when meeting Xi.

However, Rubio soon went into 'tourist mode,' gazing at the gold-painted ceilings with a circling finger of approval - perhaps, James suggests, imagining it as a model for a new White House ballroom.

Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth maintained an 'action man' pose. Standing in the greeting line with his arms splayed to highlight 'biceps flexed,' Hegseth projected a state of 'military readiness.'

Though he later softened this stance, nodding 'sagely and deeply seriously' while an interpreter explained points at the banquet.

The power dynamics shifted visibly during the bilateral meetings. While day one was defined by 'mirrored alpha poses,' day two saw Trump's energy 'ebb,' according to James.

Xi said in his speech that both countries can 'help each other succeed' and 'advance the well-being of the whole world'

Sitting across from Xi, the contrast was stark.

'Xi adopted the pose of a true, fearless alpha with his arms and his knees splayed,' James noted. In contrast, Trump appeared 'tired and sitting hunched forward.'

James describes this shift as a body-language version of a 'dying fall' - a tonal trait in which a voice weakens at the end of a sentence.

Trump's telling gesture of 'one hand balled into a fist pushing into the palm of the other' hinted at the immense pressure of negotiations, particularly regarding Iran and trade.

Even at the glittering state banquet in the Great Hall of the People, the 'battle of the alphas' continued in the smallest details.

In a classic Trump move, the President reportedly asked for a cushion to be removed from his chair. According to James, this 'backfired,' as it left Trump sitting lower than a 'more upright Xi.'

Though Trump attempted to 're-boot' his pose into a dominant splay later in the evening, the visual ground had already been lost.

The visit culminated on Friday, with a 'friendship walk' through the Zhongnanhai leadership compound and lunch.

Here, the power dynamic was finalized.

While the two leaders admired roses and trees, it was Xi who took the lead, becoming 'more tactile' and even 'touching Trump's back to steer him through the doorway.'

Trump, meanwhile, remained on his 'best grown-up behavior,' moving with a stiffness James joked might have been prompted by 'instructions from Melania to be elegant at all times.'

Despite the 'friendship photos' and the presence of 'regal' family members like Lara and Eric Trump - who James described as the President's own 'William and Kate' - the expert noted a distinct lack of genuine connection.

Unlike the 'casual, chatty, playful warmth' often seen between Xi and Vladimir Putin, the Trump-Xi dynamic remained strictly formal.

'What was missing,' James said, 'was non-verbal signs of any deeper friendship.'

Ultimately, while Trump succeeded in rebranding himself as a 'mature heavyweight,' the optics of the trip suggest he was playing catch-up.

Trump was a polite guest, but Xi was the undisputed master of the house.
