New bodycam footage shows cops make another mistake after Chicago police officer was accidentally shot by her own partner
Alyssa Guzman · 2026-06-01 · via News | Mail Online

New bodycam footage has revealed more crucial missteps Chicago police officers made after one of their own was shot by her own partner in the line of duty

Officer Krystal Rivera, 36, was shot by Officer Carlos Baker while they were chasing a suspect through an apartment building in the Chatham neighborhood around 9.50pm on June 5, 2025.

She was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, with an ensuing autopsy finding that the fatal shot pierced Rivera's skin and traveled through both her lungs, wedging itself in her ribs.

But newly-released footage, obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times, shows a series of blunders in the aftermath of her being shot while in a race against time to get her medical attention.

The clip showed how officers were delayed from taking Rivera to the hospital as they tried to figure out who had the keys to the vehicle.

A large team of frantic officers yelled at others to get out of the doorway as three cops carried Rivera out of the building by her arms and legs, the footage showed.

'Get out of the doorway! Get out of the doorway!' one female cop could be heard yelling.

'Come on, come on,' a male officer yelled as they carried her down the sidewalk.

Others went deeper into the building, assuming the three would get Rivera to the hospital, but they would instead be quickly called back to the doorway as they needed the keys.

Nearly a minute after they carried Rivera outside, officers came back in search of the keys.

Three officers carried her out of the building by her arms and legs

'Who's got keys? Who's got keys? I need keys to get out of here!' the officer, whose bodycam footage is being shown, yelled.

As the woman officer who ran back into the building to get the keys realizes they're the wrong ones, the cops are set into another frenzy to find the right ones.

'They're trying to move the officer out!' a man screamed.

The keys were then passed through an assembly line of officers before an officer who is filming the ordeal is seen running them to the street to hand them to a colleague.

The frantic effort to get the keys came after Baker took cover in the stairwell for more than 90 seconds after shooting Rivera, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Then, once the SUV carrying Rivera got on the road, it caught fire on the way to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Radio traffic showed a dispatcher asked the officers inside about the car fire, to which an officer responded about a minute later that another squad car would have to bring her the rest of the way.

By then, nine minutes had already passed since the shooting.

Chicago Police Officer Carlos Baker shot Rivera during a pursuit

Officers were delayed in getting her help as they couldn't find the keys to the vehicle

Baker accidentally shot Rivera after he appeared to trip over his feet during the pursuit. The bullet hit Rivera, who was standing behind him, the outlet reported.

Baker told investigators that he carried Rivera down to the first floor before giving his keys to another officer and going back upstairs.

'I told them to take her to the hospital,' he said, according to The Sun-Times.

It took around a minute to get them so they could drive her to the hospital

Officers then went back to searching for the suspect amid confusion over who shot Rivera.

Baker later told investigators he had only realized he was the one who fired the fatal shot when he checked his service weapon at police headquarters and noticed a bullet was missing.

'I was lost and confused. I was in denial that I even fired my gun,' he recounted.

The cop also insisted he was 'best friends' with Rivera and that he 'would never' intentionally shoot her, saying he was willing to risk his life for Rivera and remembered thinking: 'I will die for her, that I had to get to her.'

'I just want to speak to Krystal and say "I love you" and that "I miss you,"' he said. '"I will never forget you... I won't let you down, I promise." That's it.'

But following the tragedy, it was revealed Baker had many complaints against him -  which Rivera's family argued should have taken him off the force prior to the incident where their daughter died.

Rivera's family has sued the city over the incident. They accuse him of leaving her 'to die' due to their romantic relationship ending after she found out he was living with another woman, The Sun-Times reported.

Baker, though, told investigators he and Rivera had 'no more than' three intimate encounters and denied they were ever in a 'relationship.'

He said even suggested they continue to work as partners on the tactical team and said they kept hanging out after they were in separate relationships.

Rivera, a mother of one, was pronounced dead at a local hospital

The suspect ducked into an apartment, where a second man was seen holding a long gun

The cop, who was relieved of his duties last summer following reports that he battered another 29-year-old off-duty cop and allegedly attempted to interfere in the internal investigation into that complaint, also claimed he didn't 'have time to render aid.'

'It wasn't going to work.  I knew she had to get to a Level 1 trauma center to surgery, effective immediately,' he insisted.

Previously released bodycam footage showed he and Rivera getting out of a vehicle and running toward a man outside of an apartment building, demanding he 'freeze' and raise his hands.

But the man instead ducked into the building and bounded up the stairs, with Baker and Rivera pursuing close behind.

As Baker made his way up the stairs, with Rivera on his tail, the suspect - who was later identified as Adrian Rucker - ducked into an apartment.

Baker then kicked down the door as the suspect proceeded to flip over the couch.

At that point, another man - later identified as Jaylin Arnold - could be seen exiting a room with a long gun in hand.

Baker appeared to quickly react, turning and firing one shot - and Rivera fell to the ground.

Officer Rivera, pictured alongside her friend Officer Lindahl, had reportedly been in an on-and-off relationship with Baker

Meanwhile, Baker ran up the stairs, where he caught his breath before asking: 'Krystal, are you okay?'

When he did not receive an answer, Baker could be heard calling for an ambulance and asserting: 'I can't get my partner!'

He also asked another resident of the building to call 911.

About two minutes later, Baker could be seen going to check on his partner before additional units arrived on the scene to transport her to a local hospital.

The Daily Mail has contacted the Rivera family lawyer, Antonio Romanucci, and the police for comment.
