A school board member resigned from her post days after a schoolgirl killed herself in front of her fellow students inside a packed cafeteria.

Dr. Leah Euerle stood down from her position after the unidentified 18-year-old shot herself inside Valley Forge High School in Parma, Ohio, last month.

Euerle cited 'harassment, threats, and hostility' as being part of the reason behind her stepping down.

Her departure followed both the shooting and a tense board meeting during which police had to escort members of the public out of the room.

Some school board members even left the meeting due to the scenes that unfolded, KOLD reported.

Concerned parents and students raised questions about security measures and mental health resources.

According to WOIO, one speaker directly called for the board to resign, saying: 'They don’t feel safe. You need to resign. Your response has been seriously inadequate.'

One student said: 'I do not feel safe in school anymore. School is a place of learning, not fear.'

The district has said they will be conducting their own review of safety and security measures to identify areas that need strengthened.

Superintendent Dr. Scott Hunt said in a statement: 'We are deeply grateful to the staff for their quick action and care for students during this incredibly difficult situation.

'As we prepare for students to come back, we recognize the concerns that families have.

'Additional supports will be in place, including an increased staff and security presence.'

In her letter of resignation, Euerle said: 'After much thought, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my position on the school board.

'With the tragic recent event, the weight of this role has become overwhelming for me and my family.

'What should be a time of healing and support has instead brought harassment, threats, misinformation and hostility.

'The ongoing internal conflict amongst the board, combined with continuous misrepresentation of events, has made it increasingly difficult to continue in a constructive and sustainable way.'

The board meeting was a tense affair with parents and students expressing their dismay at school leadership

She continued: 'I am praying for the family. As a mother, I cannot begin to fathom the loss of a child, and my heart is with them during this unimaginable time.

'I hope the students are able to lean on one another and find strength in supporting each other as they process grief and begin to heal.

'As a former secondary teacher, my thoughts are also with the staff, who carry the weight of showing up for students while processing their own grief.

'Our students deserve leadership that is focused on unity, truth and what is best for them.'

Responding to her resignation, Superintendent Hunt said: 'The resignation of Parma Board of Education member Dr. Leah Euerle comes at a very difficult and emotional time for our school community.

'In the wake of the recent tragedy that has deeply impacted our schools, we recognize that emotions are high and many individuals are processing this loss in different ways.

'We respect Dr. Euerle’s decision and acknowledge the weight of serving during such a challenging moment.'
