A female wheelchair user faced an unthinkable horror after she invited a Tinder date to her home to watch a movie, according to prosecutors.

Matthew Walter Baird, 29, was arrested on May 18 at his home in Concrete over the alleged rape of an unidentified 27-year-old woman, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained by the Daily Mail.

Baird, a 6ft 220lb man, is accused of sexually assaulting the woman around 1pm on May 30, 2025, in Mill Creek after meeting her on the popular dating app, authorities said.

The woman, who reported the alleged incident in June 2025, has spina bifida - a condition where the spine and spinal cord do not form properly - and is wheelchair bound because of it, court documents stated.

On the day of the alleged incident, Baird asked if he could come over to her apartment after they communicated over Tinder for about four weeks, she told police, according to an affidavit.

Despite only ever meeting her Tinder matches in public, the woman had Baird over to watch a movie, but that's when things turned violent, the woman told authorities.

According to the woman, Baird forced sexual acts on her, strangled her, and 'pulled her hair from the crown of her head,' while telling her 'you know you like it,' police said.

The woman said that Baird also ripped off her pants, 'tearing them down the seam,' and forced himself on her despite her protesting and telling him she was in pain, the affidavit detailed.

Matthew Walter Baird, 29, allegedly raped and strangled a 27-year-old disabled woman whom he met through Tinder, according to prosecutors

During the alleged encounter, the woman said she 'dissociated', and 'started to lose vision and black out,' and could not fight back because she has very little movement in her legs due to her medical condition, court records said.

Before leaving her home, the woman said that Baird put his cell phone number in her phone, and that he reached out to her the following morning, asking if he could come over again, the documents stated.

She told him no, leading Baird to block her on Tinder. The woman has not spoken to him since, the affidavit read.

Afterwards, she disclosed what happened to her friend, who then convinced her to get medical treatment at Swedish Mill Creek Hospital, where a sexual assault nurse examiner documented bruises and genital lacerations on her body, among other injuries, investigators said.

DNA that was collected during her examination, and later analyzed by the Washington State Crime Lab, determined that 'the DNA profile was 680 octillion times more likely' to include Baird 'than unrelated people selected at random from the U.S. population,' documents detailed.

Detectives also spoke to two other women during the investigation who said they were previously in relationships with Baird after meeting him through dating apps, according to court records.

When police got in contact with Baird, they arrived at an apartment that he shares with a woman who said she was in a relationship with him for about five months, per the affidavit.

Officers then disclosed that he was under arrest for the alleged sexual assault, and when they told the woman in the home when it happened, she said that, according to her phone calendar, he had left that day to see his mother, court documents stated.

Police later got in contact with the suspect's mother, who told them she was estranged from her son, but was aware that Baird 'had fathered several children and knew him to have at least four,' police said.

The victim could not fight back against Baird because she has very little movement in her legs due to her medical condition, court records said

Police also noted that when Baird's mother picked up their phone call, she 'was not surprised or alarmed whatsoever.'

Another woman, who said she was the mother to two of Baird's children, claimed their second kid 'was a product of Baird raping her,' investigators stated.

Prior to his recent arrest, Baird was already in Whatcom County Jail for almost 10 months after he pleaded guilty to a fourth-degree assault charge with sexual motivation, according to court records.

For this alleged crime, Baird is being held in the Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of third-degree felony rape and second-degree assault by strangulation, and a misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree assault, court records showed.

This is not Baird's first run-in with the law, as he was previously accused of sexually assaulting a minor on multiple occasions, The Bellingham Herald previously reported.

Baird, then 24, was arrested in January 2021 for the alleged crime against an eight-year-old child in Bellingham, according to jail records obtained by the outlet.

Detectives also spoke to two other women during the investigation who said they were previously in relationships with Baird after meeting him through dating apps, and that they were also allegedly raped by him, records showed

He was booked into Whatcom County Jail on January 15 of that year on a first-degree child molestation charge and held in lieu of a $10,000 bail, per the report.

The child molestation case is currently pending against Baird, the affidavit read.

Baird is currently being held in the Snohomish County Jail on a $102,500 bond, his jail records revealed.

It is unclear when he is next due in court.

When contacted by the Daily Mail for comment, Baird's public defender, Matthew Mearns, said his client 'has no comment for the media at this time.'

The Daily Mail also contacted the Whatcom County Prosecutor's Office for comment.
