A clip of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wearing a hijab at an Eid celebration in New York City has sparked conservative backlash online.
Wednesday marked the beginning of Eid al-Adha, a Muslim holiday that commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. The holiday is observed from May 27 to May 30 this year.
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and AOC spoke at a celebration for the holiday in the Bronx on Wednesday attended by hundreds of people. Parts of the borough are in AOC's congressional district.
At the event, AOC wore a hijab, and Mamdani wore a kurta in the style of the Arsenal soccer team's uniform.
A kurta is a traditional garment commonly worn by Muslims that falls to the knees and has a collar and long sleeves. Mamdani is NYC's first Muslim mayor, a fact he proudly touted in a tweet about the event.
A short clip of AOC speaking at the celebration while Mamdani stands behind her motionlessly looking forward has been making the rounds online, garnering hundreds of thousands of views and thousands of comments across social media platforms.
Conservative observers have criticized the congresswoman as hypocritical for donning the religious garment.
'AOC wearing a hijab exposes the total moral bankruptcy of the radical left,' an angry user on X wrote.

'This theatrical Marxist simpleton screams about patriarchy while cosplaying in a garment mandated by brutal theocracies. Iranian morality police execute women over this exact covering,' the user's tweet continued.
'Yet this lobotomized progressive parasite treats their subjugation as a trendy accessory.'
'You’re the woman who tried to convince other women that the U.S. was becoming Gilead, and they needed to fight to not become Handmaids,' another user on X wrote, referencing the fictional totalitarian, patriarchal theocracy in Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale.
'You have just accepted, endorsed, and wore the clothes required to be one. You are Gilead now. You are telling other women to be Handmaids.'
One user on Instagram also said AOC was being hypocritical because her political beliefs do not align with Islam. 'The Marxist wearing a hijab,' the user wrote. 'Marxism is fundamentally incompatible with Islam, or any religion.'
'They find Christianity oppressive but she is ok with this?' another user on Instagram said.

Some users said the outrage over the clip was overblown. One of those tweets is pictured here and below

Today as we honor Prophet Ibrahim, Eid al-Adha reminds us that sacrifice is not a burden. It is an opportunity to see ourselves as part of something larger. To extend a hand to those who need it most.

For all the outrage, some people found no issues with the clip. 'Oh no, someone's showing respect to a religion in the most diverse city in the country. WHATEVER SHOULD WE DO?!' one user on X wrote.
'Turning a simple Eid gesture into full treason meltdown? Peak fragile outrage addiction,' another user said.
'That’s not exposing pandering - it's your crew’s xenophobia jones flaring for cheap clicks while real problems get ignored. Stay pressed, clowns.'
The Daily Mail has contacted AOC's and Mamdani's offices for comment.
