Sometimes when you’re out and about, the call of nature can feel like too much to resist.

But many people will do precisely that and wait until they’re back home to use the toilet.

Almost half of Britons in a poll (47 per cent) said they would refuse to use the toilet on a train to do a ‘number two,' while 38 per cent cannot face using an aeroplane toilet.

The same proportion said they would not use the toilet in their best friend or partner’s house - presumably out of potential embarrassment rather than reasons of hygiene.

More than a third of people said they would ‘keep it in’ rather than use shopping centre, pub or municipal public amenities.

Restaurant, work and gym loos are also a turn off for many Brits, while 22 per cent said they would never use their in law’s toilet for this purpose.

The research, commissioned by gut health brand Symprove, found that one in five (22 per cent) only go for a poo two or three times a week, with one in twenty (5 claiming) they only go just once a week - a clear sign of constipation.

Diet may be a problem with 55 per cent of people admitting they don’t eat enough fibre.

Sometimes the call of nature is too much to resist, as shown by Peter Mandelson (pictured), who faces a £300 fine after he was caught urinating against a wall in public

GP and broadcaster Dr Sarah Jarvis, who is working with Symprove, said, ‘Many people feel embarrassed about using toilets outside the home, but regularly holding in bowel movements can contribute to constipation and may worsen symptoms for people living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

‘Diet and looking after your gut health both play an important role in supporting healthy digestion.’
