An elderly man walking his dog has died after being brutally attacked with a metal pole by an alleged stranger in Queensland on Wednesday.

The 78-year-old, from North Isis, 46km south of Bundaberg, was walking along a road at 2.40pm when he was allegedly attacked by a 36-year-old man. He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. 

The man then drove into nearby Childers before he allegedly choked a 66-year-old man with a garden hose until locals intervened and restrained him.

Witnesses said the 36-year-old appeared to be having a psychotic episode after a series of earlier alleged road rage incidents. 

A local police officer ran to the scene where he arrested the man and took him into custody.

A family friend of the elderly man who died described him as a 'very nice guy' who loved taking his dog for a walk.

'He was very friendly and outgoing,' he told the Courier Mail. 

'He was always walking his dog, taking him out for daily walks.

'He was friendly every time we drove past, he'd always wave at us. He walked down that street pretty much every single day.' 

The two incidents occurred within 30 minutes, beginning when the man allegedly reversed his car into another vehicle, then punched the driver multiple times in the head before driving off. 

'Around 2.30pm a Mitsubishi Pajero was travelling on North Street when the driver stopped behind a silver Subaru Liberty at the pedestrian crossing near Hinkler Street,' a Queensland Police spokesman said.

'The Subaru has reversed into the Pajero. The driver of the Pajero, a 65-year-old Howard man, got out to inspect the damage and the Subaru Liberty has reversed into him.'

The Pajero driver was transported to Bundaberg Hospital with serious head injuries. 

Earlier that day, the same silver Subaru Liberty was allegedly involved in a traffic crash on the Bruce Highway at Glenorchy when the vehicle deliberately reversed into a Tesla. 

The man then allegedly verbally abused the Tesla driver before driving off.

Police say the victims are not believed to have known the man. 

On Thursday morning, police confirmed the accused has been charged with murder, attempted murder, acts intended to maim, disfigure or disable, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and evasion. 

He will appear at Gladstone Magistrates Court via video link on Thursday.
