A small plane has crashed at an airport in South Australia, causing a hangar to burst into flames. 

Emergency services were notified of the accident at Parafield Airport ,in Adelaide's north, at about 2.10pm on Wednesday. 

Police are at the scene near Kings Road and say the plane was attempting to land before the incident. 

South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) and South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS) are also at the scene, with residents warned to stay indoors. 

'If you or anyone in your care are having difficulty breathing, seek medical attention from your local GP,' MFS said. 

'If your symptoms become severe, call 000.' 

The immediate area has been evacuated. It is unknown how many passengers were on the plane, in the building, or whether there have been any casualties. 

Thick black smoke is currently covering the area and the public has been advised to avoid the area if possible. 

A Parafield Airport spokesman said the airport had been closed to all air traffic.

'We will provide full support to the emergency services in their response to this incident,' he said. 

One witness told ABC Adelaide a large fire was burning in the hangar. 

'I've seen multiple fire trucks going through - this is probably the fifth one now, and multiple emergency services heading out there. It's pretty big,' he said.

'You could see the gable in the front doors of the hangar billowing out black smoke, just coming out.' 

One person said they saw the plane go down and a fireball erupt into the air.

'I was thinking 'wow, that guy's very low to be attempting a turn that sharp!' and then it just dropped out of the sky and bang,' he said. 

'Not looking good.' 

The plane is believed to have twin engines.
