An alleged drunk driver had a sobering experience after getting behind the wheel while more than twice over the legal alcohol limit.
Jaw-dropping images released by South Australian Police show a large wooden pole piercing the windscreen of a 32-year-old woman's car after she crashed at the Esplanade at Aldinga Beach, in Adelaide's south, early on Sunday morning.
Emergency services were called to the beach at 12.30am following reports that a Mazda sedan had collided with a guard rail, run off the road and plunged onto the sand.
The driver, a local woman, miraculously wasn't injured. The pole hit the passenger seat side of the vehicle and she was alone in the car.
The woman submitted to a breath test and allegedly recorded a positive result of 0.110, which is more than twice the legal alcohol limit.
The 32-year-old was given a six-month instant loss of licence by police and she was charged with drink driving and driving without due care, requiring her to appear in court at a later date.
