New York City hotel cleaners are expecting an enormous minimum salary bump after a new union contract reached a deal.
An annual salary of at least $100,000 is set to be implemented for NYC hotel cleaners after the labor agreement between the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council and the Hotel Association of New York was finalized on Tuesday.
'This is a game-changer for working people in this city,' former HTC President Peter Ward told the International Business Times.
'Housekeepers are the backbone of New York's hospitality industry. They deserve pay that reflects the true cost of living here and the hard, physical work they do every single day.'
An eight-year contract was agreed upon that would see wages increase by more than 50 percent for workers, union officials told the New York Times.
The deal also improved benefits for housekeepers and other hotel employees, including mental health support, protective equipment upgrades, career advancement and paid family and medical leave.
Union leaders declared the new agreement as one of the most transformative in the sector's history, according to the IBT.
Hotel workers' union president, Rich Maroko, told NYT: 'Wage increases were our primary focus in this contract cycle because the cost of living for our members has been increasing so dramatically.'

Around 25,000 employees stretching some 300 NYC hotels would be covered under the agreement, which has experienced housekeepers seeing annual compensation exceeding $100,000.
Entry-level housekeepers would begin work with significant raises and wages that will continue to climb as their experience grows, IBT reported.
The agreement follows demonstrations and protests outside of hotels over recent weeks, as the cost of living in New York continues to mount pressure on residents.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he was 'proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with our hotel workers' as they rallied for better pay and benefits.
'This contract is a win for our hospitality industry, our economy and for a city that works best when the people who keep it running can afford to live here too,' Mamdani said in a statement to NYT.
Industry representatives acknowledged the economic struggle that employees are facing, but noted the hotel industry's struggles following the Covid-19 Pandemic.
'This agreement balances the needs of our dedicated employees with the realities of running a business in one of the world's most expensive cities,' Vijay Dandapani, president of the Hotel Association of New York City, told the outlet.
The new deal equally protects workers on workload limits and aims to address staffing shortages and improve training programs, IBT reported.

'I can finally breathe,' Marina Gonzalez, a hotel housekeeper for over 17 years in Times Square, told the outlet.
'No more choosing between rent and groceries. This changes everything for my family.'
However, fears arose over sharp increases in labor cost leading to increased prices for consumers and a decline in hiring.
Ward, however, refuted the concerns and said: 'Well-paid, respected workers stay longer and take greater pride in their work. This is good for hotels, good for guests and good for New York City.'
Former Mayor Eric Adams told the outlet: 'This is what happens when labor and management work together. New York is a union town and today's contract proves why this matters.'
Frustrations among hotel workers have been prevalent across the country, notably in Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The Daily Mail contacted the Hotel Association of New York, the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council and Mayor Zohran Mamdani for comment.
