Exchange student claims she was kicked out by host family...
2026-05-14 · via News | Mail Online

An Italian exchange student living in Australia has claimed she was kicked out of her host family's home following a row about pineapple pizza.

Ginevra, 18, was in her room preparing for a workout session over the Easter long weekend when she claimed her host mother knocked on her door and told her to pack her bags and leave.

The teenager, from Cagliari in Sardinia, and who is a part of the Rotary Youth Exchange Australia program, said the eviction came as a shock.

'She knocked on my door as I was getting ready to go to the gym and she said "Ginevra, pack your bags, you're leaving",' Ginevra said.

'There was no warning, nothing.'

The Italian said she had almost ten host families during her time in Australia because the program 'struggled to find families that could host [her] for more than a month'.

She said she was 'really excited' to stay with her latest family because it was her 'first normal one' and there appeared to be no issues.

'They had a daughter that was my age and had gone on exchange before, so maybe she would have understood me,' Ginevra said.

Ginevra claimed she was kicked out of her host family's home without warning after a row about pineapple pizza

'In the first month, everything was fine and they were really nice,' she said.

However, she claimed things soon turned sour with her host mother.

'For her, I was either eating too much or too little, and she would say rude things to me about how I ate in front of other guests,' she said.

'She would also call me out in front of everybody for really small things.'

Good Friday came along, and Ginevra said her choice for dinner at their family gathering was the final straw for the mother.

'We had guests over and my host dad was making a pineapple pizza and as an Italian, I don't really eat pineapple pizza,' she said.

'I asked him if it was OK for me to eat the leftover salad from earlier and he said "yes, of course", so I started preparing it as normal.'

She claimed the mother lost it when she found out and humiliated her in front of all their guests.

The student declined a pineapple pizza in favour of salad and two days later she claims she was being booted from the home

'In front of everybody, she started saying "do I look fat? Tell me that you think I look fat",' Ginevra said.

'I was just standing there thinking "what is this grown a** woman telling me?"

'She then said "so you're telling me you didn't come to Australia for the food?".'

The tirade didn't end there, with Ginevra claiming the mother became increasingly agitated.

'She started saying things like "you won't always have your 17-year-old body and you won't always be skinny with your a** out all of the time",' she said.

'"You will end up like me one day".

'"Do you think that eating like this at 17 will not make you like me at 57?".'

She was told she would receive an apology, but instead, the teenager claimed she was kicked out two days later.

She shared the video of her recounting the story online and received dozens of comments from people sympathising with her.

'She's just jealous, people are so insecure!' one wrote.

'This breaks my heart for you. We've hosted 10 students throughout the years and we have so many great memories with them,' another said.

'Pineapple on pizza ruined everything,' joked one.
