Hollywood icons Dame Joan Collins and Jane Fonda brought the glamour to the red carpet at the 79th Cannes Film Festival's opening ceremony at Palais des Festivals on Tuesday night.

Joan, 92, looked sensational in a white gown which she teamed with a diamond necklace and black gloves.

The Dynasty actress was joined by her devoted husband Percy Gibson, 61, on the carpet.

Jane, 88, who boasts an impressive six-decade career, was age-defying as she dazzled in a floor length black sequin dress.

The leading ladies created a buzz as they posed for photographs thanks to their A-list status, which comes after years of models dominating the red carpet.

Elsewhere, Demi Moore, 63, was effortlessly gorgeous in a strapless white sequin gown teamed with a statement diamond necklace.

Speaking to the Daily Mail at the opening press conference, Demi said she felt 'tremendously honoured to be here'.

'It's such a beautiful experience and one just to be surrounded by cinema and the love of cinema, and the joy of diving in and being surrounded by those who share that is just – I just felt like a joy.'

'And who can complain about the beautiful view of this incredible place? But yes, I just feel tremendously honoured and I'm super excited. I really – I feel like a little kid getting to play a grown-up.

'You know, prior I had only ever attended the Cannes Film Festival once, and that was only as someone's plus one. And so to be sitting here today, I am really, really tremendously honoured.'

Demi also gave her thoughts on AI in the movie industry, insisting we should embrace new technology.

'I always feel that againstness breeds againstness. AI is here, and so to fight it is a battle that we will lose.

'So to find ways in which we can work with it, I think is a more valuable path to take.

'The truth is, there really isn't anything to fear because what it can never replace is what true art comes from, which is not the physical.

'It comes from the soul. It comes from the spirit of each and every one of us sitting here, to each and every one of us that creates every day.'

On a busy day in the French town, stars including Heidi Klum, Gillian Anderson, Michelle Rodriguez, Riley Keough and Halsey were among the first to arrive in anticipation of its launch on Tuesday evening.

Emma Thynn claimed the spotlight on Tuesday morning as Vanity Fair hosted a star-studded lunch on day one of the 79th Cannes Film Festival.

This year, the Cannes Film Festival will honour filmmaker Peter Jackson with an honorary Palme d'Or at the upcoming French festival.

Festival organisers announced Jackson as a recipient in March for what they hailed as 'a body of work that blends Hollywood blockbusters and films d'auteur with extraordinary artistic vision and technological audacity'.

The Lord of the Rings director, in a statement, called the honor 'one of the greatest privileges of my career'.

Jackson recalled that he first came to Cannes in 1988 to sell his first movie, Bad Taste. In 2002, he returned to preview Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

'This festival has always celebrated bold, visionary cinema, and I'm incredibly grateful to the Festival de Cannes for being recognized among the filmmakers and the artists whose work continues to inspire me,' he said.

Last year, Cannes gave honorary Palme d'Or prizes to Robert De Niro and Denzel Washington.

This year's edition runs for eleven days from May 12 to the 23rd.
