Teenager with severe peanut allergy 'died from eating dessert at Turkish hotel after waiters insisted it was safe to eat' as family condemn holiday firm for delaying inquest
2026-05-19 · via News | Mail Online

An inquest into the holiday hotel death of a 19-year-old man with a severe peanut allergy has been put on hold for another seven months - to his family's distress.

Relatives of Idris Qayyum, from west London, blame package tour operator Love Holidays for neglect after he appeared to suffer a fatal anaphylactic reaction after eating a dessert on a roof terrace at the Marti Myra Hotel in Antalya in June 2024.

His mother and his sister attended a remotely held court hearing on the day the full inquest into what happened in June 2024 had been scheduled to take place.

Mr Qayyum's family say he repeatedly asked waiters at the hotel whether any puddings on the menu included peanuts - both in English and, using Google Translate, in Turkish - only to be assured they were safe.

Yet within minutes of tucking into one, he began feeling nauseous before he and his travelling friend returned to their hotel room.

A coroner today challenged the travel firm over ongoing delays presenting evidence in the 90-minute pre-inquest review hearing, as she set provisional new dates for mid-December - while the family's lawyer also told of their concerns.

Valerie Charbit, assistant coroner for west London, highlighted immense pressures on courts system for carrying out other inquests - and rejected Love Holiday requests to extend time for further information until September.

Mr Qayyum, who had been diagnosed as a toddler with the severe peanut allergy, was studying to be an electrician and was on his first foreign holiday without his family at the time of his death.

Idris Qayyum, from west London, suffered a suspected anaphylactic reaction while in Antalya, Turkey, in June. He is pictured in May 2023 celebrating his 18th birthday in Dubai

Idris' friend urgently video called his mother Ayeshah Bathia, who desperately shouted at emergency crews to administer the EpiPen as she watched them perform CPR on her son.

Less than 25 minutes later, however, his heart had stopped working and despite attempts to save him he was declared dead.

Mr Qayyum's mother and his sister Amaani attended the remote hearing, not speaking although Ayeshah appeared visibly upset at times as discussions continued.

Investigations are continuing into what ingredients were in the cakes on offer on the menu - with suggestions the hotel disputes that peanuts were included, saying they were only ever ordered as bar snacks.

Today's hearing was told of concerns on behalf of Mr Qayyum's family about ingredient lists for the desserts and whether there could have been cross-contamination in the hotel's kitchens.

Fellow guests who were there at the time of Mr Qayyum's death have given witness statements though two will now face follow-up questions, it was decided today.

Ian Denham, counsel for Mr Qayyum's family after being instructed by law firm Leigh Day, expresed alarm after his legal counterpart for Love Holidays told how the company had not concluded its investigation and could not provide a timescale.

Mr Denham told the remote court hearing: 'The family find this deeply concerning.

The 19-year-old had a severe peanut allergy, diagnosed when he was a toddler - Idris Qayyum is pictured here in Dubai in May 2023

'Love Holidays provides holidays for UK consumers, from which they profit. We accept it's commonplace in the industry to have contracts with foreign hotels and other suppliers.

'But the fact is we've gone on so long and Love Holidays have not investigated the death of one of their customers and they continue to market this hotel.'

It also emerged in court today that Love Holidays has been working with an intermediary, a Swiss company called OTS International providing agents 'on the ground' in Turkey to liaise with the hotel and seek further information.

Imogen Todd, representing Love Holidays, said their investigation was being carried out by OTS and was ongoing, with 'no particular date' for its conclusion yet known.

She requested a September deadline for further information to be provided, though the assistant coroner called for some evidence within a week and follow-ups a month from now.

Ms Todd told the court new information only came in from the hotel two weeks ago.

Ms Charbit said: 'You'll undertand all coroner's courts have a real difficulty with listing cases. This absolutely must proceed in December.'

Ms Bhatia previously told the Daily Mail in December 2024: 'Our lives have been shattered forever. To lose our son aged 19 is the worst tragedy any family could face.

Idris Qayyum, who was studying to become an electrician, told a waiter he had a severe peanut allergy and asked whether desserts contained the allergen three times, his family say

'But to lose him in circumstances where we were not able to be there to help him is very hard to bear.

'And to lose him knowing that he had made every effort to protect himself from a harm to which he knew he was vulnerable is even worse.'

Mr Qayyum had taken his EpiPen, Ms Bhatia said, but it was unclear why this did not prevent his death.

She added: 'There was a 20 to 25 minute window from when he ate the dessert and when his heart stopped.

'Idris was always really vigilant with his allergy. He would always read the packaging of anything he was going to consume. He was really sensible.

'We avoided it as best as we could. Over the years, he very occasionally accidentally ate peanuts and his symptoms were different every time.

'But it always affected his breathing and he knew he needed his asthma pump.'

A Love Holidays spokesperson said at the time: 'We are deeply saddened to hear of Mr Qayyum’s passing and would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.

'The safety of our customers is our top priority and we are conducting a thorough investigation with the hotel involved as a matter of urgency.

'As Mr Qayyum’s family have now instructed lawyers, we are unable to provide any further comment.'
