An eight-year-old boy and a man were run over by a BMW driver while having a picnic at a motorway service station.

The black luxury car - driven by a 76-year-old woman - careered into an outdoor table at the Cardiff Gate services on the M4 before smashing into a shop at 11.45am9 on Monday.

The boy, the 39-year-old man and the driver all had to be rushed to hospital following the crash.

Police said that the man had serious, 'potentially life-changing' injuries. None of the injuries sustained by the three hurt are thought to be life-threatening however.

A witness told Wales Online: 'It was awful. About 15 people were trying to lift the car off.'

She said the window front of the shop smashed on impact, adding: 'I imagine the driver had a medical emergency as I can't understand how they went into the building at that speed.

'All emergency services are there.'

Detectives have opened an investigation into the incident and launched an appeal for witnesses to come forward.

She told Wales Online: 'About six or seven seconds later it hit the pedestrians and the service station.

'There was this almighty smash and the car actually went through the window. I can still hear the screams in my ears.
