While they say eyes are the windows to our souls, the hands are without a doubt a telling sign of someone's real age.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the photographs taken at the Met Gala last night, when A-listers dressed to impress descended on the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for the most glamorous night in the fashion calendar.

Famous faces such as Cher, Kate Moss and Lauren Sanchez, who alongside her husband Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos sponsored much of the event, made sure not a hair was out of place for their dazzling appearances.

Yet, while their looks were certainly youthful compared to their real ages, many celebrities were let down by their ageing hands. 

UK-based Dr Ross Perry, medical director of Cosmedics skin clinics, told the Daily Mail how hands are the most telling areas when it comes to visible indicators of maturing.  

He said: 'Unlike the face, the skin on the backs of the hands is thin and exposed to sun, environmental stressors and daily wear, so features such as skin texture, volume loss, tendon prominence and pigmentation can become more noticeable with age.'

The expert has now revealed the celebrities who were betrayed by their dry skin, lack of volume or even veiny hands at the Met Gala - and those who weren't... 

Kate Moss

Dr Perry said: 'Kate has always embraced a more natural aesthetic, but her hands do show typical signs of ageing, including visible veins, thinning skin and some pigmentation. 

'These are very common, but as Kate has been facially genetically blessed, it does place her hands a decade older than her years, and sadly hands are often more difficult to conceal than facial ageing. 

'Treatments such as skin boosters or even light laser resurfacing can help improve skin quality without overdoing it.'

Kate, 52, left almost nothing to the imagination as she flaunted her age-defying figure beneath a racy black sheer lace gown at the Met Gala. 

The supermodel's eye-popping dress showcased her skimpy lingerie beneath, while Kate added extra sparkle with chandelier emerald earrings.

Lauren Sanchez

'With Lauren, there appears to be a large contrast, at least a decade between a highly polished facial appearance and mature-looking hands,' suggested the expert. 

'This is incredibly common in patients who prioritise facial treatments. A combination approach, including hyaluronic acid fillers, can dramatically rejuvenate the hands and bring them in line with the face.'

Lauren, 56, the wife of billionaire Jeff Bezos, arrived in a daringly low-cut Schiaparelli ensemble.

This year's gala was marred with controversy over the Amazon founder, 62, and Lauren sponsoring the event. The couple reportedly gave $10 million to the Costume Institute in exchange for being named honorary co-chairs.

Naomi Watts

Dr Perry said: 'Naomi’s look is generally very elegant and natural, and her hands reflect that. There may be mild volume loss and early pigmentation, but nothing excessive. 

'Preventative treatments, such as SPF (which is often neglected on the hands), alongside light resurfacing treatments, would be enough to maintain their appearance. 

'In fact, I’d say her hands are only a few years older than her face appears.'

British-born actress Naomi Watts, 57, was another star who added a pop of colour to the evening as she hit the red carpet in a strapless black gown with striking floral embellishments.

The colourful detailing covered the back of the dress and was also styled into the actress's blonde locks.

Cher

Cher, 79, rocked a custom look by Burberry's Daniel Lee that featured a black leather corset jacket and a long tulle skirt. 

The doctor claimed: 'At 79, Cher looks fantastic overall, but naturally her hands show more pronounced ageing. 

'What we can see here is thinning skin and prominent veins, completely in keeping with how you’d expect a 79-year-old’s hands to look, compared to Cher’s face which could easily pass for someone 15 years younger. 

'While you can’t completely reverse this, treatments like fat grafting or fillers can soften the appearance, and energy-based devices can help improve skin firmness.'

Donatella Versace

'It’s no secret that Donatella likely succumbed to aesthetic work on her face over the years, but her hands show more advanced signs of ageing such as texture changes and pigmentation,' said Dr Perry.

'With Donatella a more intensive approach is needed such as combining laser treatments, chemical peels and ongoing skin maintenance to improve tone and texture over time.'

For her Met Gala appearance, Donatella looked typically glamorous in a figure-hugging dress, featuring gem detailing.

Blake Lively

Blake Lively, 38, stepped out in a show-stopping Atelier Versace gown from the brand's Spring 2006 collection at the Met Gala.

Dr Perry claimed: 'Blake generally maintains a very youthful overall appearance, but her hands are lagging behind. 

'From the Met Gala images, there are subtle signs of volume loss, again placing her hands older than her face at around five years. 

'This is where dermal fillers in the hands can be very effective, restoring volume and reducing the prominence of veins and tendons for a smoother look.'

Margot Robbie

Wuthering Heights star Margot Robbie, 35, returned to the Met Gala for the first time since 2023 in a custom Chanel gown - and her hands appeared just as youthful as her face, according Dr Perry.

He said: 'While we often talk about hands giving age away, there are also several celebrities who are clearly investing in hand care, and it shows.

'The key markers of youthful hands are even skin tone, good hydration, minimal visible veins and maintained volume.

'Margot’s hands appear very youthful, which suggests a strong focus on skincare consistency. The skin looks even-toned and well-hydrated, with minimal pigmentation.'

Nia Long

Nia Long looked stunning in a sleeveless gown and a dazzling diamond necklace as she made her debut at the 2026 Met Gala.

Dr Perry praised her youthful hands, saying: 'Nia has incredibly smooth, even-looking hands with very little visible ageing. This points to both good genetics and ongoing maintenance.'

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman, 58, arrived as a co-chair of fashion's biggest night in a red sequined Chanel ensemble. 

Commenting on her hands, Dr Perry claimed: 'Nicole’s hands are a great example of subtle, well-managed rejuvenation. 

'There’s a softness and fullness to the skin, which may indicate the use of fillers to maintain volume and reduce the prominence of veins and tendons.'
