Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is facing a fresh wave of scrutiny as a financial probe tied to her husband's business dealings has now collided with new allegations of internal turmoil in her congressional office.

At the center of the controversy is a California winery co-owned by Omar's husband, Tim Mynett, which has now shut down operations entirely. 

Business records show the venture ceased activity on April 4, as investigators and lawmakers were already circling over dramatic swings in the couple's reported finances.

The closure comes just weeks after House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer demanded answers over what he described as 'serious public concerns' tied to Omar's financial disclosures. 

In a February letter to Mynett, Comer pointed to filings that appeared to show companies linked to the couple - eStCru LLC and Rose Lake Capital - ballooning in value from tens of thousands of dollars to as much as $30 million in a single year.

'Given that these companies do not publicly list their investors or where their money comes from, this sudden jump in value raises concerns that unknown individuals may be investing to gain influence with your wife,' Comer wrote.

Yet in a dramatic reversal, Omar's office has since insisted those eye-catching figures were wrong.

An amended financial disclosure shows the couple's assets actually fall between roughly $18,000 and $95,000 - a fraction of the earlier estimate. 

Her team has attributed the discrepancy to accounting errors, saying the congresswoman relied on financial professionals when filing.

'The amended disclosure confirms what we've said all along: The congresswoman is not a millionaire,' spokeswoman Jacklyn Rogers said earlier this month.

But the sharp swing from potentially tens of millions of dollars down to under six figures has only served to intensify scrutiny on Capitol Hill, with Republicans questioning how such a significant reporting error occurred in the first place.

The now-defunct winery, once marketed as a boutique label sourcing wines from across the West Coast, has become a focal point of that scrutiny.

Unlike traditional vineyards, the business operated largely as a brand, outsourcing production rather than owning physical facilities.

Online, skepticism had been building for months. Social media users complained they could not purchase bottles, locate distributors, or even access the company's website, which has since disappeared.

By early 2023, according to reporting by the Minnesota Reformer, winemakers tied to the label alleged they had stopped receiving payments. 

Lawsuits and fraud accusations followed, while former employees claimed they were left unpaid.

The winery, briefly touted as a rising brand in 2022, has now joined Mynett's venture capital firm in collapse with both entities no longer operating.

But even as financial questions mount, a separate controversy has erupted inside Omar's own congressional office, one that critics say underscores deeper concerns about leadership and oversight.

The congresswoman is now facing accusations that she ignored a potential 'abuse of power' involving a relationship between her top aide and a subordinate.

According to reporting, Omar's longtime chief of staff, Connor McNutt, married legislative aide Tahreem Alam in December during a ceremony attended by Omar herself.

The marriage, and the relationship leading up to it, has drawn sharp criticism from at least one Democratic source, who described the situation as a 'glaring conflict and abuse of power dynamics,' noting that McNutt had oversight responsibilities over Alam prior to their union.

The criticism only intensified after Alam was promoted to a more senior policy role in November 2025, just one month before the wedding.

'Turning a blind eye to this sort of conduct within her own office, and then attending the wedding on top of that, and being by all accounts pretty supportive of it … I find it gross,' the source said, according to The New York Post.

Omar's office has pushed back, stating that Alam is not supervised by her husband and that all promotions are made directly by the congresswoman. 

A spokesperson added that the relationship and office policies were disclosed to 'relevant parties.'

'We generally don't comment on the personal lives of our staff, but yes, the two of them got married and we are happy for them,' the office said in a statement to the Post.

Ethics experts note that while House rules prohibit lawmakers from having relationships with subordinates, there is no explicit ban on senior staff dating junior employees, leaving individual offices to set their own policies.

Donald Sherman, the EO of Citizens for Responsible Ethics in Washington said the situation may not violate formal rules but still raises important concerns.

'There doesn't appear to be a violation of the ethics rules in this case,' Sherman said, while adding that offices should ensure relationships 'do not run afoul of harassment or the prohibition on favoritism.'

The controversies swirling around Omar are unfolding against a broader political backdrop in which she has long been a target of Republican criticism, including from President Donald Trump, who has previously called for investigations into her finances.

Omar has forcefully rejected allegations of wrongdoing, insisting no laws were broken and emphasizing that she has never been charged in connection with any of the claims surrounding her finances or her husband's businesses.

'For years, he has called for investigations against me and they have found nothing,' Omar said earlier this year, referring to Trump. She added that the president has 'an unhealthy and disturbing obsession with me and the Somali community.'

Even so, the overlapping developments, the shuttered winery, the financial disclosure reversal, and the internal office controversy have created a politically volatile moment for the Minnesota lawmaker.
