A Canadian doctor has suggested that babies with severe deformities could be euthanized under the country's controversial assisted suicide laws.

Quebec College of Physicians member Louis Roy has been condemned by a lobbying group after a comment he made during a 2022 parliamentary committee resurfaced.

Roy previously said that under current Canadian law, assisted suicide could be considered for infants up to one year old with severe ailments.

Brandan Tran, Director of Public Affairs and Outreach for political lobby group Campaign Life Coalition, has condemned this comment.

'These are not concerns from the fringes, but statements from a member of a provincial medical college, recommendations before parliament, and the reality of MAiD right now in Canada,' he said.

'A member of the Quebec College of Physicians formally stated that MAiD "may be an appropriate treatment for babies" from birth to one year of age with severe deformities.'

Roy suggested in 2022 that assisted suicide 'may be appropriate for babies suffering from extreme pain,' and that parents 'should have the opportunity to obtain this care for their infant.'

He was quoting a December 2021 Quebec College of Physicians statement which supported considering newborn euthanasia in cases involving 'unrelievable extreme suffering'.

However, Tran equated Roy's comments with calling for 'the calculated killing of an infant'.

A College of Physicians spokesperson clarified that the proposal was referring to infants with conditions deemed incompatible with life in the short term.

'We are really talking about situations which, at birth, are incompatible with life in the short term - in a matter of days, weeks or months,' said Dr. Alain Naud, a family physician and vocal advocate of assisted suicide.

The Daily Mail has contacted the Quebec College of Physicians for comment. 

The Medical Aid in Dying program, or MAiD, is a process that allows Canadian citizens suffering from a 'grievous and irremediable medical condition' to end their life with the assistance of a doctor. 

However, only those with physical ailments are eligible for the program.

Former actress Claire Brosseau is among those begging the Canadian government for a quick assisted suicide based on mental ailments, which are currently excluded.

The 49-year-old's career, which saw her star alongside James Franco and Daniel Stern, was quickly derailed as she struggled to cope with a laundry list of disorders.

Brosseau suffers from manic depression, suicidal ideation, an eating disorder, bipolar disorder, substance abuse disorder, PTSD, and several other illnesses.

The actress and comedian, who is single, has family and friends who adore her, but she has been saying for years that she no longer wants to be alive.

Brosseau has been battling to access euthanasia under the MAiD program since 2021, and she made a rare appearance from her home to make another court bid covered by CTV News earlier this month.

'It's unbearable. Every morning I wake up I don't think I'm going to make it through the day,' Brosseau said in a speech outside of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. 

The former entertainer said her mental illnesses have worsened over the last three decades despite trying everything she could to overcome them.
