Own goal! Driver is pulled over by police for balancing f...

A 'senseless' driver was pulled over by police for balancing a football goalpost on their car roof in a moment captured by dashcam footage.

Officers spotted the motorist who social media users mocked for having 'no common sense' on the evening of May 12, 2025, in Boreham Wood, Hertfordshire.

The force shared a video to Facebook of the moment patrollers came across the vehicle, with the bizarre footage since going viral and racking up more than a million views.

It shows the EV driver pulling out of a junction with the plastic goal perched precariously on their roof, with the apparatus swaying back and forth as the car turns.

The goal then continues to wobble before officers turn on their emergency lights and pull the car over. As the vehicle mounts the kerb, the equipment almost falls off completely.

Hertfordshire Police joked that the driver had scored an 'own goal' on social media, but warned their foolish decision could easily have caused a collision.

They said that 'driving with an insecure load is illegal' and could even lead to a prison sentence.

But the offender was ultimately spared jail, and instead handed three points on their licence, ordered to pay a £120 fine and a £48 victim surcharge.

A motorist was pulled over in Boreham Wood, Hertfordshire, earlier this month for driving with a goalpost balanced precariously on their roof

Video footage of the moment shows the apparatus swaying back and forth before almost falling off completely as the vehicle mounts the kerb

The police force's post read: 'Own goal on the road! One driver landed themselves in trouble after carrying a football goal on top of their car and while this clip may have made you laugh (or gasp), there's a serious side.

'The goal was not secured properly and could have easily caused a collision.

'In the UK, driving with an insecure load is illegal and classed as dangerous so serious cases can even lead to prison.

'Stay safe and avoid a red card by securing all loads properly, keeping heavy items low and in the boot, not overloading and tying roof loads front, back and over the top.

'The result for this driver was three licence points, a £120 fine and a £48 victim surcharge.'

Underneath the post, viewers were quick to mock the motorist for the senseless decision, while questioning why the goal wasn't disassembled for the journey.

One commented: 'Bet he wished he pulled out that road 30 seconds later.'

A second said: 'Those things pull apart in about three minutes and go straight in the boot. Why would you even do that?'

A third joked: 'Surely you only get three points if you win.'

And another added: 'Good job! No common sense.'

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Police said: 'The vehicle was stopped on Monday, 12 May 2025 at approximately 6.08pm in Boreham Wood.

'The driver of the vehicle recently attended court and was given three licence points, a £120 fine and a £48 victim surcharge.'
