The 'affair mode' phone settings that all cheaters use: I knew my partner was up to something... here's how I cracked his secret code and uncovered all his dirty antics
2026-04-27 · via News | Mail Online

Cheaters are becoming more technologically savvy than ever, turning to hidden phone settings, disappearing messages and location tricks to conceal their tracks.

Experts warn that modern smartphones and apps now offer dozens of ways to quietly erase evidence, making it easier than ever to hide secret conversations, unexplained trips and late-night meetups, often without leaving obvious digital clues behind.

For Kerry, a Los Angeles woman, the moment she realized something was wrong came when conversations that once existed suddenly vanished.

Kerry told Daily Mail the turning point came when entire message threads she had previously seen simply stopped appearing. 'He deleted everything on his phone,' she said. 'But he forgot about his iPad on the nightstand.'

When she opened the tablet, months of conversations reappeared, messages arranging late-night meetups and restaurant visits that had never been mentioned at home.

The discovery revealed a pattern experts say is becoming increasingly common: partners relying on disappearing messages and hidden digital settings to erase traces of their activity.

Kerry later discovered that her partner had activated disappearing messages in his WhatsApp settings, allowing chats to delete themselves after a set period, a tactic experts say is increasingly used to hide digital evidence.

Her unfaithful man went to even greater lengths to conceal his deceit, using unorthodox tactics to hide the depths of his betrayal. 'I found a shared Google Doc between him and my best friend from high school,' Kelly revealed.

'It had everything… messages, plans, what they were going to do together, pics. I sat there scrolling... It was all planned out, right in front of me. How could I be so dumb?'

For the woman who discovered months of 'dinner for two' deliveries, the breakthrough came after opening an app that had remained logged in, one that had not drawn attention until notifications appeared unexpectedly

Relationship therapists and divorce attorneys have even started calling it 'affair mode.' The term refers to a collection of built-in and easily downloadable smartphone tools that allow messages to disappear automatically, hide identifying details in notifications, lock conversations behind Face ID, conceal certain apps and prevent locations from being tracked.

These features weren't necessarily designed for extramarital deception. Many exist for security and convenience, but when combined, they can create a phone that appears ordinary while quietly concealing nefarious activity.

Tech expert Kim Komando, who specializes in consumer technology, digital security and internet advice, has revealed all the secret 'affair mode' settings and how to discover them on your partner's phone.

She tested the methods across multiple devices, warning that screens may look slightly different depending on the model and operating system. If the options do not appear the same, she urged users to keep searching, saying the answers are often still hidden within the settings.

The calculator that isn't

No one needs two calculators.

Calculator Pro+, Calculator Vaul, and Secret Calculator look exactly like the built-in calculator app. Enter a secret PIN, and they open into a hidden photo vault, private messaging app, or secret call log.

If you can't get in, check the app's size under Settings > General > iPhone Storage. A real calculator is tiny, under 5MB. Anything claiming to be a calculator taking up 30MB or more is hiding something.

Real calculators don't need access to your contacts, microphone or camera. If the one on that phone does? That's not math.

Hide an app lets users obscure the icon and name of the app on the Home Screen, which will also pause notifications. Users can also lock built-in apps like Mail, Messages, Notes, Phone, Photos and Safari that can only be opened with Face ID

Location mapping

There is one feature most people overlook: location tracking.

On iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations. Your phone will likely request Face ID.

Once inside, you'll find a detailed history showing where that device has traveled, organized by city and date, often including exact addresses and timestamps. Apple refers to these as 'Significant Locations & Routes.'

They are stored locally and encrypted, but still accessible to anyone who knows where to look.

On Android: Google Timeline works in much the same way. By opening Google Maps, tapping a profile photo and selecting Your Timeline, users can see a day-by-day map showing exactly where an account has traveled, including routes taken, time spent at each stop and the names of locations visited.

Unlike Apple's Significant Locations feature, Google Timeline stores data in the cloud, meaning the information can be accessed from any device logged into the same Google account, including shared ones.

Vanishing messages

Many people assume deleted messages require effort. In reality, entire message histories can be set to remove themselves automatically.

On an iPhone: Go to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages. If it's set to 30 Days instead of Forever, older conversations disappear automatically without warning.

Individual messages can also be erased instantly. Swipe left on any message, tap More, then Delete, and the content disappears immediately.

But deleted messages do not always disappear everywhere.

In the case where a wiped phone revealed nothing, the person was an Apple device user. Their missing conversations were eventually found on an iPad that had been left behind.

Because iMessage typically syncs across devices, conversations can remain stored in unexpected places unless someone deliberately disables syncing.

For many people, disappearing messages created the illusion that nothing was happening, until older data surfaced elsewhere.

WhatsApp goes even further. Entire conversations can be set to erase automatically after 24 hours, seven days or 90 days.

Kerry told Daily Mail that her partner was using the vanishing message option. 'He was using WhatsApp so nothing would stick,' she said.

The feature can be turned on inside any chat by tapping the contact name, then Disappearing Messages. You'll never see it unless you happen to be in that specific chat watching it happen.

To find if someone is using vanishing messages on Android, look for a dark theme screen, a 'Vanish Mode' notification at the top of the chat, or a dotted circle icon in the chat list. Both users are notified and messages disappear after viewing.

Locked message threads

Not every missing conversation is deleted - some are simply hidden from view.

For some people, those small changes have led to discoveries far bigger than they expected. One woman found her husband's phone logged at a hotel two hours away on a night he claimed to be working

Android and WhatsApp have features that let users hide text conversations from prying eyes.

Stashing away messages on Android can be done by archiving them, using secure folders, activating 'silent notifications' or installing third-party apps to lock chats.

To find archived messages, open the Google Messages app, tap your profile icon or the three-dot menu at the top right, and select 'Archived.'

To check if text notifications are silenced on Android, long-press the messaging app icon, tap the 'i' or 'App Info' icon, select Notifications and see if Allow notifications is enabled and set to 'Default' or 'Alert' rather than 'Silent.'

Top third-party Android apps for hiding text messages include dedicated privacy tools like Vault - Hide SMS, Pics & Videos, Private Message Box and disguised apps like Messages Calculator+ (PSB).

For apps like WhatsApp: Locked chats appear at the top of the main chat screen and will require FaceID or a pre-set secret code to access.

While Apple's iMessage doesn't have a function to lock individual text threads, the texting app itself can be locked with a password or face ID by pressing down the app icon and selecting the option.

Hidden apps

Apps do not have to be deleted to be hidden.

On an iPhone, any app can be removed from the home screen while remaining fully installed.

To take it out of view, press and hold the icon, tap Remove App, then select Remove from Home Screen.

The app continues to run in the background and send notifications, even though it no longer appears on the screen.

Locate hidden apps on an iPhone: Swipe right past the final home screen page to open the App Library. Every installed app appears there, including those without visible icons.

Another iPhone method: Settings > General > iPhone Storage, which lists every installed app on the device.

On an Android: Hidden apps can be found by checking the App Drawer settings, looking under Settings > Apps, using the search bar, or checking Private Space, if enabled.

Battery usage can also reveal hidden activity.

On an iPhone: Navigate to Settings > Battery, where recently active apps appear alongside usage times.

One Reddit user shared their experience after uncovering a cheating partner by means of an app.

'I was cleaning up our shared tablet and noticed a notification from a food delivery app I don't usually use on that device,' they shared.

'I opened it and saw a login for an email address I didn't recognize. Then I looked at the order history.

'Two months of 'Dinner for Two' specials, sushi platters, Italian pasta, expensive wine, delivered to a residential address 15 minutes from his office. Every single order matched the nights he told me he was sleeping on the couch in the breakroom.'

Unlabeled notifications

Sometimes secrecy depends not on hiding apps, but on hiding alerts.

On an iPhone: Go to Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and select Never. Once enabled, notifications display only the word 'Notification,' hiding both names and message details.

Apple's Focus Modes allow even more customization. Specific contacts can bypass silencing while all others remain hidden.

On an iPhone: Review Settings > Focus carefully. Custom Focus schedules, particularly those triggered at unusual times, require intentional setup.

For several people who later reviewed phone settings, these notification changes explained why alerts never appeared when expected, even when activity was ongoing.

Android users can also hide alerts, a feature touted as enhancing privacy and reducing distractions.

To tell if alerts are being hidden on Android, check Notification History in settings, which logs dismissed alerts from the past 24 hours.

On an Android: Go to Settings > Notifications > Notification history. If alerts show as 'Sensitive Content Hidden,' adjust lock screen privacy settings or check for app-specific 'silent' notification settings.

These tools are not just for deception

While it's true that, for those who began noticing inconsistencies, strange locations, missing messages and unfamiliar activity are the places that ultimately provided answers.

But before jumping to conclusions, remember that not every hidden app or locked folder signals wrongdoing. Many people use privacy settings for legitimate reasons, including protecting medical records, financial data or sensitive work materials.

Technology itself does not create deception - behavior does. But when suspicion grows, and explanations stop making sense, these settings often hold the details that conversations never reveal.
