A clip of radio presenter Chris Moyles offering to take a then 15-year-old Charlotte Church’s virginity has gone viral, prompting viewers to urge the BBC to launch an investigation.

During a live broadcast in 2002 on his afternoon show on Radio One, the then-27-year-old Moyles marked the teenage soprano turning 16 by announcing that he wanted to take her virginity.

Five years later in 2007, the DJ went on the Welsh singer’s Channel 4 programme, The Charlotte Church Show, and was asked to ‘explain your behaviour’ by the host.

Moyles said: ‘Well, you were under 16, yeah 15. But you were gonna be 16 and I offered to take your virginity.’

The crowd began to laugh and Charlotte probed: ‘What exactly did you say?’

Moyles had said he wanted to ‘lead her through the forest of sexuality now that she had reached 16’, which he then defended as a ‘sweet’ proposal.

At the time, the broadcasting standards commission condemned Moyles for the comment.

The almost two-decade-old clip has now resurfaced online in the wake of the Scott Mills saga, in which the Radio Two host was sacked from the BBC last month after he was accused of serious sexual assault against a boy under the age of 16.

The allegations date back between 1997 and 2000, but the complainant first reported them to the Met Police in 2017. Scott was questioned in 2018, but the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case in 2019. 

Now viewers of the clip are urging the BBC to look into Moyles, who worked at the corporation between 1997 to 2012 and now hosts a show on Radio X, with more than one million listeners tuning in a week.

One person commented: ‘This was a really tough watch. She exposed him and no one listened, surely the BBC have got to look into this.’

Another added: ‘License fees having been funding this carry on for years, it’s all coming out now. Why is he not being looked into?’

While one person wrote: ‘The cringe thing is this clearly isn't a bit, this happened, you can see how uncomfortable it made Moyles feel, fair play Charlotte for calling him out, seems like cool, collected revenge in the most classy way possible. Shame it didn't end his career.

The Welsh songstress referenced the moment in a 2023 interview with Kathy Burke for her Channel 4 documentary, Growing Up.

Charlotte said: ‘It wasn’t good, but at least it was out in the open.

‘That lads, lads, lads culture was dominant. It was very simplistic, it was unashamed, it was just out there and everybody knew what it was. But now it’s become more underground, and more dangerous.’

Chris Moyles and the BBC have been contacted. 

A spokesperson for the broadcaster told Daily Mail: 'Chris Moyles hasn't worked at the BBC for more than 14 years now. However, there are no circumstances in which similar language or behaviour would be tolerated by the BBC today.' 

In 2023, a spokesperson for the BBC said: 'Like all parts of the organisation we adhere to the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines and take our duty of care for our audience, contributors and employees very seriously.'

An insider added: 'The incident described took place over 19 years ago and under no circumstances would any similar language or behaviour be tolerated at the station in 2021.'
