There has been an urgent recall on apples and kiwi fruit sold at supermarkets across Britain following fears of potential Salmonella contamination. 

An alert was issued on Tuesday by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) stating PrepWorld - the specialist fruit supplier - has recalled several fruit packets from major grocery stores after testing identified Salmonella in apple and kiwi used in various products. 

The affected products are prepped fruits sold in shops including ASDA, Morrisons, M&S, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose. 

All the fruits, including Pink Lady apples, have specific best-by dates of June 23 to 24. 

Among the affected products include ASDA's 220g Pink Lady Apple, Mango, Strawberry & Blueberry - a ready to eat fruit pot priced at £2.75. This is ASDA's only listed product as possibly contaminated with the bacteria.  

At Morrisons, one item is also only being recalled - a similar pre-packaged 220g Kiwi, Melon & Strawberries, sold for £2.50. It's use-by date is June 24. 

However, four Tesco fruit packets have been recalled from its stores following the warning. 

Its 250g Melon, Kiwi & Strawberry pots with a use-by date of June 24, costing £2.50, have left the shelves, as well as its 100g Kiwi Fruit Pot, priced at £1.50. 

Tesco's 290g Fruit Kebabs - comprised of kiwi fruit, watermelon, mango and pineapple chunks - have been listed as an affected product, in addition to its 125g  Melon, Kiwi & Strawberry packets. They are priced at £4.10, and £1.50, respectively.

Sainsbury's and M&S have three products each being recalled by PrepWorld. 

Sainsbury's 220g Melon, Kiwi & Strawberry pots is among the affected, as is its Orange & Kiwi 240g packs.

Its Pink Lady Apple & Grape packets - which are 240g - have also been taken off the shelves. All have a use-by date of June 23. 

At M&S, apples are the most affected fruit. Its 90g Café Pink Lady Apple slices, 90g (FTG) Pink Lady Apple and 225g Pink Lady Apple Slices - all with use-by dates of 24 June - have been recalled from its stores. 

It is a similar story for Waitrose, whose 115g Pink Lady Apple and Grapes packets - with a best-by of June 23 - made the list. 

In a statement, the FSA explained: 'Prepworld is recalling the above products. Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products. 

'These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products. Please see the attached notices.

Salmonella, the world's leading cause of food poisoning, is a bacterial illness that can cause fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

Salmonella infection is typically caused by eating raw or undercooked meat, poultry and egg, however, fresh fruit and vegetables can be a source of contamination. 

Young children, people aged 65 and over and those with compromised immune systems are at higher risk of becoming 'severely ill' with food poisoning by salmonella, according to FSA guidance.

Food poisoning symptoms usually start within a few hours or days of eating the contaminated food - though can sometimes come weeks after, the NHS said.

The NHS advise: 'The most important thing is to have lots of fluids to avoid dehydration,' alongside rest, paracetamol and eating when able.

The FSA has asked customers that have bought the affected fruit packet products to 'not eat them'.

Instead, it said: 'Return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.' 

The fruit recall comes only one year after an urgent 'do not eat' warning was issued over Salmonella fears in a savoury snack sold by supermarket Lidl. 

Lidl recalled its Sol & Mar Chicharricos BBQ Pork Scratchings as 'they may be contaminated with salmonella', according to the FSA.

The warning specifically applied to 100g packets of the meaty snack with best before dates from August 5 to 12, 2025 inclusive.

Shoppers who bought the snack were instructed not to eat them and instead return them to store for a full refund. No receipt was required to do so. 

'The potential presence' of the nasty bacteria in the affected batch of scratchings could cause 'severe gastrointestinal symptoms', the FSA warned.
