Minnesota couple and daughter hit with federal charges after roughly shoving female conservative reporter at violent anti-ICE protest
2026-05-01 · via News | Mail Online

A Minnesota family has been hit with federal charges after allegedly assaulting a conservative reporter at an anti-ICE protest.

Christopher Ostroushko, his wife Deyanna and their daughter Paige were charged with assaulting Savanah Hernandez, a reporter for the conservative advocacy group Turning Point USA which was founded by Charlie Kirk.

Hernandez was allegedly attacked on camera while covering the 'F*** ICE Day' protest in Minneapolis earlier this month, leaving her with broken glasses, a concussion and multiple sprains.

On Wednesday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the unsealing of a federal grand jury indictment charging the trio with assaulting a journalist who was 'lawfully' reporting on federal property.

'Hernandez was allegedly surrounded, physically assaulted and shoved to the ground - simply because she was identified by the defendants as a conservative journalist,' Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said.

'That is NOT "peaceful protest,"' he added.

'These deplorable actions as charged in the indictment will not be tolerated in America, and this Department of Justice will always punish unhinged acts of political violence.'

Christopher Ostroushko, Deyanna Ostroushko (both pictured) and their daughter, Paige Ostroushko, were federally charged with assaulting reporter Savanah Hernandez

It was also revealed that Christopher and Paige were additionally charged with willfully and forcibly injuring and intimidating Hernandez.

'Political violence is a national scourge,' US Attorney Daniel Rosen for the District of Minnesota said. 'And federal law enforcement will not tolerate it.'

In a statement to X, Hernandez wrote: 'HUGE UPDATE. Turns out that Chris, Paige and DeYanna Ostroushko will ALL be facing federal charges for assaulting me.'

'It was initially reported that only 2 of the 3 would be facing charges, however, Acting AG Todd Blanche has just announced that ALL THREE were indicted and will be facing charges,' she added.

'Thank you to the DOJ and FBI for doing everything they can to ensure that justice is fully served in this case. I am incredibly grateful to see our justice system at work.'

As for state charges, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that it had filed a fifth-degree assault charge against Christopher in connection with the attack at the Whipple Building, according to Fox 9 News

In a statement, a Hennepin County Attorney’s Office spokesperson said it had reviewed potential charges against three other individuals but determined there was 'insufficient evidence' to move forward.

In his defense, Christopher told podcast Pushing the Limits: 'We are absolutely not violent people. In fact, we tend to shy away from it.'

The charges come after Vice President JD Vance and Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon announced that the FBI had launched an investigation into the assault.

Christopher and Paige (pictured whistling) were also charged with willfully and forcibly injuring and intimidating Hernandez

Hernandez said the assault left her with broken glasses, a concussion and multiple sprains

'I talked to Kash Patel... and I said, "I assume we're doing something here," and he said, "Yes, we've had multiple agents on the ground. We've already talked to Savanah,"' Vance said.

'We're gonna use the video to try to go after the people who assaulted her, and then try to defund the networks that fund those radicals who are going around assaulting activists,' he added.

The violent confrontation allegedly began on April 11, when anti-ICE protesters discovered Hernandez’s affiliation with TPUSA and quickly surrounded her, following her around menacingly.

Paige then blew a whistle directly into her ear before Christopher shoved the petite reporter to the ground.

In the now-viral footage, Hernandez can be seen reacting to the whistle by raising her hand to her face and, at one point, appearing to push Paige away to get her to stop.

That's when all hell broke loose, as Paige began shouting, 'You hit me!'

DeYanna then came up and shoved Hernandez, saying, 'You f***ing hit my daughter?' Hernandez pushed back, replied 'Get the f*** off of me!' and began walking away.

While Hernandez had her back turned, Christopher walked up and pushed her to the ground while screaming, 'You f***ing touched my daughter!'

After the attack, the family claimed, 'We are absolutely not violent people. In fact, we tend to shy away from it'

Paige was seen in Hernandez’s face saying, 'Stupid b****, you f***ing touched me! You f***ing touched me!'

Paige then got in Hernandez’s face as she tried to get up, saying, 'Stupid b****, you f***ing touched me! You f***ing touched me!'

Christopher and his wife, DeYanna, appeared on the small podcast Pushing the Limits days after the alleged assault to share their account of what happened, which contradicted what could be seen in the video.

'In fact, that day, you’ll see I was not even up in the front at all during this whole event. I just stayed back and kind of watched what was going on,' Christopher said.

DeYanna claimed that Hernandez 'backhanded' Paige before Christopher shoved the reporter to the floor. That appears to have been in reference to Hernandez pushing the daughter while protecting herself from the whistling.

'So after that happened, she started to move out of that area, Paige was moving out with her, and she had punched Paige again, so that was a second assault,' DeYanna said.

She said that when Paige tried to defend herself and said she had been punched, she stepped in to support her daughter, at which point Hernandez allegedly 'grabbed' her by the throat.

Trisha Pohland, an attorney for the Ostroushko family, told Fox News Digital: 'Based off what I’ve seen, she went and hit Paige in the face when Paige was blowing a whistle… which she has every right to do and Savanah was the one that hit her.'

Meanwhile, Hernandez spoke to Fox News Digital about her side of the story, saying the incident left her with a head injury and multiple sprains.

Hernandez said that the family of aggressive protestors 'refused to leave me alone'

Trisha Pohland, an attorney for the Ostroushko family, claimed it was the reporter who first hit Paige

Hernandez thanked TPUSA leadership, including Erika Kirk, for reaching out to her

She also pushed back on Christopher's claim and said: 'If I hit them first, it would be on camera.'

'There’s multiple angles of Paige walking up to me as I’m standing by myself. And also her mom is the first person who came up to start harassing me,' she said.

The conservative reporter explained that she was shoved by DeYanna and Christopher several times before the father 'instructed his daughter on camera to go and "blow the whistle in my effing ear."'

Hernandez told the outlet that the family of aggressive protestors 'refused to leave me alone,' and that 'every single time they attacked me was while I was trying to leave.'

She thanked TPUSA leadership, including Erika Kirk, for reaching out to her and providing support in a post on X.

'I've never asked for security when conducting point-and-shoot journalism, because I've always had some semblance of hope that I still live in a safe country,' she wrote.

'However, after Saturday TPUSA ensured that I will have new security protocols moving forward due to the violent nature of the left-wing.'

The Ostroushko family is scheduled to appear in federal court in Minneapolis on May 12.
