A Texas congressional candidate backed by Governor Greg Abbott reportedly mailed out a flyer mocking his veteran opponent's disability.
Texas State Representative, John Lujan, mailed out a campaign ad ripping into Carlos De La Cruz, whom he referred to as a '100 percent disabled' kickboxer, Fox News Digital reported.
Lujan accused De La Cruz of claiming he was completely disabled in order to 'avoid paying any property tax.'
In Texas, veterans deemed completely disabled are exempt from paying property taxes. More than 164,000 veterans receive these exemptions in the state, 2024 Veterans Affairs data showed.
De La Cruz, who was endorsed by Donald Trump, once owned and operated a kickboxing gym in San Antonio, Fox News said.
'[He] was physically fit enough to train in and operate a kickboxing gym and lists himself as a volunteer carpenter,' the Abbott-backed candidate's mailer said. Abbott is wheelchair bound.
Charlotte Neiner, a veteran herself and a member of the Wounded Warrior Project, slammed Lujan for the 'disgraceful' move, especially ahead of Memorial Day, which honors servicemembers who have died.
'This is the most shameful thing I have ever pulled out of my mailbox,' she told Fox News Digital.

'He never wore the uniform a single day. He has no idea what these injuries cost, and he never will... A man with this little honor has no business anywhere near Congress.
'I am proudly voting for Carlos De La Cruz, and John Lujan should be ashamed of himself.'
The two Republican men are set to face each other in the primary on Tuesday. Lujan is currently polling ahead of De La Cruz by five percent, Fox News Digital said.
De La Cruz has promised to work alongside Trump to 'keep the border secure, take care of working families, and ensure we have a military that's strong.'
'I’m honored to have President Trump’s support, and he’s counting on Texas to show up this Tuesday,' he wrote on Facebook on Saturday.
Lujan has also promised to secure the border, as well as provide property tax relief.
De La Cruz is an Air Force veteran and a small business owner who is running as being a 'Texas Trump conservative.'
De La Cruz's specific medical diagnosis has not been publicly revealed but it is believed they were sustained during his 20-year career serving in the US Air Force in Iraq and Afghanistan.
