Aussies were divided by the cost-cutting method on Reddit, with some arguing it was wasteful during a cost-of-living crisis.
'We're basically in an economic crisis and homie is just wasting food before even buying it,' one person said.
Others warned it could lead to the supermarket pushing up the price of broccoli.
'This is the type of thing that will make them turn to a unit price instead of weight, so everyone will then lose except the supermarkets,' another said.
'Now you've created food wastage at the store that will contribute to them raising prices of broccoli,' a second agreed.
'Well done you clown, you know what happens now? It puts upward pressure on prices because the retailer isn't getting the money they expected,' a third said.
Many said all the nutrients were stored in the stems, which were also 'tasty'.

A Gold Coast woman shared a TikTok video of her boyfriend taking the skin off a banana before putting it into a plastic bag
'Eat the stems bro, they are great and have a ton of nutrients,' one person said.
'The stems are tasty though,' a second said.
'Those stems are perfect sliced up in a stir fry,' a third agreed.
'Stems are delicious and arguably the healthiest part of the broccoli,' a fourth wrote.
'Seriously, why are Australians getting dumber, you eat the whole thing,' another said.
It comes after a woman on the Gold Coast previously admitted her boyfriend peeled bananas before purchasing them.
The couple then weighed it at the checkout where it rang up to just 51 cents.
