A man has been arrested after allegedly crashing a stolen car into a pedicab and injuring multiple people in a high-speed police chase through central London.

The 31-year-old remains in police custody after he was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking, failure to stop, dangerous driving, assaulting an emergency worker and possession of a Class A substance.

Scotland Yard confirmed that the crash was not terror-related.

Videos posted online show a destroyed grey Mercedes surrounded by shocked crowds in the middle of Bow Street, Covent Garden, just after 4pm yesterday.

The man failed to stop for officers which resulted in a high-speed police chase through busy Soho streets, police said.

The pursuit ended abruptly when the car careered into the pedicab and injured several people. The injuries were minor, police said.

Officers hauled the man out of the wrecked car and arrested him at the scene at 4.14pm.

He was further arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

Police said the injuries sustained by those in the pedicab were minor as paramedics rushed to the scene to help

One witness told The Sun: 'He crashed into the tuk-tuk, knocking it over, before carrying on up the street really erratically.

'The bumper was wrecked, with shrapnel scattered across the scene.

'Police were trying to cuff him and he was screaming.'

They added that airbags had gone off on all sides of the car and one in the pedicab. Paramedics rushed to the scene to help those injured.

An investigation has been opened into the incident and cops have asked witnesses to come forward in information.

A Met Police spokesperson said: 'A 31-year-old man remains in police custody after he was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving following an incident in Bow Street, Covent Garden.

'The man, believed to be the driver of a stolen vehicle, failed to stop for officers which resulted in a vehicle pursuit. The car then collided with a pedicab, injuring multiple people. Those injuries have since been confirmed as minor.

'The investigation continues, and officers ask anyone with information to contact the Met via 101, quoting 4797/11APR.'

The Daily Mail has contacted the London Ambulance Service for a comment.
