A student at a prestigious private all-girls school allegedly messaged a WhatsApp group chat for instructions on how to build a pipe bomb.
A Year 7 student at SCEGGS, in the inner-Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst, reportedly sent the message to the chat on Sunday afternoon.
Parents told The Daily Telegraph they had received an email from the school confirming the matter had been referred to NSW Police.
'Some posts in this chat contained material which was extremely serious, and as a result of the nature of this material, we referred the matter to the NSW Police,' the email read.
'The police have taken a number of investigative steps today, both onsite and offsite, and will continue to do so. We have been, and continue to be, guided by their advice about this investigation.'
SCEGGS said 'interim school-based disciplinary actions' had already occurred but further action would be 'premature' at this stage.
It urged parents with students involved in the chat to remind them not to share the messages 'under any circumstances'.
'It is important that the girls are aware that the penalties for any person forwarding threatening or violent information to others via any medium can be extremely serious,' SCEGGS said.

Officers attached to Kings Cross Police Area Command attended the school and spoke with a student regarding the incident.
'For some of your daughters, the nature of the chat may have been very worrying, so please reassure her that it is being dealt with by the appropriate authorities – and reach out to any of the staff if your daughter is still concerned.'
The school also thanked the students and parents who alerted them of the situation.
The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
