Woman who bought rice on Amazon shocked to see something ...
2026-05-01 · via News | Mail Online

By ANNA WRIGHT, US REPORTER

Published: | Updated:

A California woman who bought packaged rice from Amazon Grocery was shocked to spot something 'wiggling' inside the bag.

San Francisco resident Amy Chau bought a bag of brown rice from the online store, which was on sale, for $3 a bag.

Chau thought she’d scored a great bargain - until she claimed to notice creepy crawlies inside the bag.

'This is my Amazon rice... that I bought from Amazon... and look what's in there!' Chau said in a video she took moments after opening the bag.

'There's something in the rice ... which is really disgusting!'

The nauseating video showed little insects, that blended in with the color of the rice, moving throughout the bag.

'There was like worms... things wiggling inside an unopened bag of rice,' she told ABC7

Chau said she didn't initially check the bag when her order arrived, and instead just emptied the rice into a container. But after a few hours, she started to notice moths flying around her home - which has never happened before.

San Francisco resident Amy Chau purchased a bag of brown rice from the online grocer

'And then when I looked in my [rice] container, I opened [it] and there were a couple of moths that flew out,' she told the outlet.

Horrified, Chau told the outlet she realized something was living in the rice, so she went to inspect the second bag and recorded the gross sight - bugs crawling in the unopened bag.

'Complete disgust! It was really disgusting,' she told the outlet. Chau discarded the bag, and filed a claim with Amazon for her troubles.

Emails obtained by the outlet showed the company approved her refund for her entire $300 grocery order, which included two bags of the bug-infested rice.

The money was scheduled to hit her account within seven business days, but the San Francisco woman claimed she never received it.

Almost a month passed, feeling helpless, she called ABC7 to try and get answers from the tech giant.

The outlet contacted Amazon on her behalf, and a spokesperson reached out.

She recorded the gross sight of bugs crawling in the unopened bag.

'We appreciate ABC7 for bringing this matter to our attention. Our team has resolved the matter directly with the customer and have apologized for any inconvenience caused,' said Lex Evans, an Amazon spokesperson, per the outlet.

Less than 24 hours after Chau contacted the outlet, she finally received the generous refund.

The tech giant also threw in an extra $100 gift card for her troubles.

'It got resolved basically the next day... the speed was night and day,' she told the outlet.

'[I'm] just relieved and happy that it finally got resolved,' Chau added.
