Former Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has described life with long-time partner Dr Reza Adib as 'blessed' just two days before he was charged with rape. 

A Gold Coast surgeon, Dr Adib, 65, has been charged with three counts of the offense, one count of sexual assault and two counts of deprivation of liberty. 

The alleged offences occurred on March 30.

Palaszczuk, 52, has not been accused of any wrongdoing and said that she was 'not aware' of the claims against her partner during an appearance in Queensland.

'I'm not aware of any of that, so I can't comment,' she said on Thursday night when asked by a member of the crowd during an event at Robina Library.

The former Queensland premier has spent the week promoting her new memoir, The Politics of Being Me, before news broke that charges had been laid against Dr Adib. 

When Palaszczuk sat down with the Daily Mail to discuss the book on Wednesday, she opened up about her life with Dr Adib.

'We're very happy,' she said. 'I'm very blessed to have Reza and his two children in my life, and Winton the groodle, who kind of completes everything.'

The couple met in June 2021 at the Stradbroke race day.

'A man named Reza Adib came up and introduced himself,' Palaszczuk wrote in her memoir, adding that they then met again, with mutual friends, a few weeks later.

'(One friend) told me he’d known Reza for a long time, that he was a surgeon, a father of two and a very decent man,' she wrote.

'Reza and I had a lot in common, and we got along well right from the start.'

Their first date was the State of Origin, followed by both attending a Queensland Fashion Festival event during which media took notice of their blooming relationship.

'Everyone we knew was supportive of us,' she said.

'But I don’t think we were expecting the level of media interest that followed – I doubt that male premiers would have received that kind of attention. Reza just coped with it.

'He supported me and regularly accompanied me to events, including getting up at 3am to join me at the Anzac Day dawn service, and numerous other community events.'

Palaszczuk described booking a fortnight of annual leave in September 2023 to join Dr Adib at a conference in Naples, Italy, and receiving intense media scrutiny.

'Why? For what? Everyone could see I was tired. I needed a break. If you don’t have a break, you can’t keep going,' she wrote.

'You cannot work 24/7 and keep a clear head, and you need to have some private time. I rarely took holidays; on this occasion, I took two weeks. I didn’t take a month.'

She also described a family holiday in January that year, when she and Dr Adib took his children, Maya and Ira, skiing at Whistler in Canada.

'It felt like freedom. Reza and his kids are excellent skiers and they’d be out doing their black runs, and I’d be in my beginner or intermediate lessons,' the former premier said.

'At night, we’d go and have pizzas, and walk in the village under the coloured lights, laughing in the snow.'

In December that year, Palaszczuk resigned from her role as premier and said she chose to spend time with Dr Adib rather than draw media attention by attending the office Christmas party. 

'I had a nice lunch and a bottle of wine with Reza, Mum and Dad. I was relieved, and very happy with my decision,' she wrote. 

Dr Adib, a general and laparoscopic surgeon, began his career at the Royal Brisbane Hospital in 1994 and established the Brisbane Obesity Clinic in 2004.

Brisbane Obesity Clinic's website boasts Dr Adib has performed more than 20,000 operations and more than 5,000 weight-loss procedures.

The surgeon also owns a three-level, five-bedroom, five-bathroom riverfront mansion in Indooroopilly that he bought for $6.25million more than a decade ago.

His luxury unit at Burleigh was searched by half a dozen police officers on Friday, who were seen leaving with evidence bags.

An officer was spotted searching inside a barbecue on the balcony.

He was given watchhouse bail and is scheduled to appear in court on May 14.

Law firm Robertson O'Gorman said Dr Adib was shocked by the allegations and is taking the matter very seriously.

'Like all persons accused of a crime, he is presumed to be innocent and intends to vigorously defend the charges,' lawyer Dan Rogers said in a statement.

'Right now, Dr Adib is primarily concerned about the welfare of his family and his patients and he will do whatever it takes to ensure that they are looked after in the coming weeks.'

The statement said Dr Adib had asked the media to respect the privacy of his family and his patients and he would not make any comment while the case was before the courts.
