Battersea Power Station has awarded Sisk the contract to build two new buildings designed by Gehry Partners to complete the neighbourhood’s new pedestrianised high street, Electric Boulevard.

Forming Phase 3C of the 42-acre masterplan, the two buildings will have around 300 new homes, 65,000 sq ft of space for shops, cafes and restaurants, a 15,000 sq ft community hub and a bike hub with 600 free spaces.

With work starting this summer, Phase 3C is expected to create 400 jobs. The developer aims for 20% of the workforce to be local.

The two new buildings will be adjacent to the buildings at Prospect Place, the only residential buildings in the UK designed by Frank Gehry, designer of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

Both new buildings will have green roofs, contributing to a minimum target of 10% biodiversity net gain.

‘One of London’s most iconic regeneration projects’

“Battersea Power Station is one of London’s most iconic regeneration projects and we are proud to have been appointed as main contractor for this next phase of development. This is a significant appointment for Sisk and reflects our growing capability in the UK residential sector,” said Steven McGee, chief operating officer for Sisk in Ireland and UK.

He said the company would bring its expertise in modern methods of construction, offsite delivery and major project execution.

Sisk’s contract for Phase 3C follows Battersea Power Station’s appointment of Studio Egret West as masterplanner, urban designer and landscape architect for the remaining 16 acres of the 42-acre riverside neighbourhood.

Studio Egret West will adapt the original Rafael Viñoly masterplan unveiled in 2008 to respond to changes in lifestyle and workspace demands.

The developer said the remainder of the masterplan has the potential to deliver up to 3.2 million sq ft of residential, commercial, cultural and leisure space.

Battersea Power Station’s Malaysian shareholders – Sime Darby Property, S P Setia and the Employees’ Provident Fund – have so far invested some £5bn in regenerating the disused industrial district around the restored Grade II*-listed power station.
