The Defense Innovation Unit is looking for modular and scalable blueprints to build synthetic battlespace platforms for multidomain, large-scale training and simulation, according to a call for submissions posted today.

The government is building facilities dedicated to supporting the necessary scale of virtual training and mission rehearsal for contested, multidomain conflict, but those sites will require modularity and rapid reconfiguration across multiple mission platforms and classifications levels. Such requirements render large, platform-specific simulators essentially unusable, DIU said.

Proposals should differ from old aircraft simulator system architectures by detaching user interfaces from platform-specific or proprietary software. Submissions should also support reconfigurable, platform-agnostic cockpit architectures by using shared simulation environment components and centrally hosted virtual aircraft services.

Proposed architectures should also support rapid scenario creation and improvement, the ability to adjust how many forces are assigned to each simulation and multilevel security across networks, DIU said.

Submissions are due June 8, and the call for submissions is divided across three solution paths. While applicants can propose against any of the solution paths or any combination of the three, DIU said separate solution briefs for each path are required.

Vendors are also encouraged to disclose or limit the use of artificial intelligence-generated proposal content. Fully AI-generated submissions will not be accepted, DIU said.

Solution Path I focuses on separating the operator-machine interface with a fighter agnostic cockpit (FAC). Solution Path II is centered on cockpit display systems to improve head-mounted hardware devices and associated software for aircraft simulation use-cases. Solution Path III is focused on data access and exchange in the Joint Simulation Environment.

Ideal submissions for any of the solution paths should be able to demonstrate technological maturity within a one-to-two-year prototyping period. They should also be able to scale across large, multisite training environments and must be interoperable with existing military systems and architectures, DIU said.
