The Defense Department is asking industry to pitch new advanced manufacturing technologies aimed specifically at developing and sustaining the next generation of aircraft capable of moving at the speed of sound, per a public notice posted earlier this month.
DOD is inviting companies to submit their technology for consideration through the Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace -- a digital repository that houses videos of emerging technology solutions -- managed by the department’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office. Submissions are due June 24.
Proposed technologies should “advance the state of the art,” DOD said. The department listed a few examples of technical capability areas it is seeking, including but not limited to 3D printing for critical components, integrated robotics and autonomy for assembly and digital tools to improve the manufacturing process.
Existing ways of manufacturing and sustaining supersonic aircraft pose challenges related to cost, production speed, supply chain risks and increasingly obsolete legacy systems, DOD said.
“This fragmented and aging approach creates significant inefficiencies, hinders our ability to scale production, and increases reliance on foreign sources for critical components, posing a risk to national security,” the notice states.
Without sizable increases in investment and innovation centered around manufacturing technologies, the U.S. risks losing its strategic advantage in aerospace, the Pentagon said.
“These new solutions must accelerate development timelines, enable the use of advanced materials, and reduce acquisition and sustainment costs,” the notice states.
Video submissions must also detail how the proposed technology is a significant improvement over existing options, and companies must be able to articulate how the business model supporting the technology supports long-term viability, encourages broader adoption and contributes to a more resilient and competitive domestic supply chain, the Pentagon said.
Submissions will undergo assessment starting July 1 and are expected to end by July 31, DOD said.
Solutions deemed “awardable” will be placed in the Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace, designating them as emerging technologies that have already undergone competitive processes to make them eligible for awards from DOD.
