



























The Defense Innovation Unit is seeking laser communication technologies in two focus areas to counter growing jamming risks tied to current radio frequency systems, according to a new call for solutions labeled "Point Break."
The first line of effort focuses on the development and testing of lightweight, energy-efficient laser communication terminals capable of sending data with different types of signals. The technology, called optical communication terminals (OCTs), will use a compact multichip package design allowing the device to seamlessly work across different communication systems and networks seamlessly, DIU said in a Monday posting.
The first focus area is structured around 18-, 24- and 36-month milestones, beginning with tests of entrants’ ability to handle multiple signals and mitigate jamming risks and culminating in a full-capability on-orbit demonstration.
The second line of effort focuses on technology with the ability to send large volumes of data with low risk of interference using laser communications between a network of commercial satellites in low-Earth orbit and on an aircraft mid-flight, according to DIU. This focus area has one milestone timeline -- submissions must be able to demonstrate successful pointing, acquisition and tracking sequences; reliable connection and the ability to quickly reconnect if a connection is lost, while communicating with multiple commercial low Earth orbit satellites and an aircraft terminal -- within 18 months.
Submissions are due May 17, DIU said.
