Marine Corps seeking optic capability for MADIS target tr...

The Marine Corps is interested in companies capable of delivering an electro-optical/infrared component for target detection and identification on its Marine Air Defense Integrated System, according to a new request for information.

Published May 6, the RFI indicates the Marine Corps’ Ground Based Air Defense program office wants to know if more than one vendor can provide an optic solution capable of detecting targets -- including group 1-3 drones -- and classifying them by threat level. Responses are due June 3.

“To best support the MADIS [family of systems] requirements, PM GBAD has a requirement to integrate and deliver an EO/IR optic with the capability to detect, track, and enable identification of the range of threats under all weather conditions to include on the move and at the halt,” the notice states.

The Marine Corps is seeking commercially available systems with a technology readiness level of eight or nine. The desired solution can either be manually controlled or “slewed” toward a target through a command-and-control system, the notice states.

MADIS and the smaller Light-MADIS are short-range air defense systems mounted on Joint Light Tactical Vehicles and Ultra-Light Tactical Vehicles respectively. The Marine Corps requested $616.5 million for the program in fiscal year 2027.

MADIS achieved initial operational capability in December 2024 and is now being fielded to the littoral anti-air battalions within the service’s two Marine littoral regiments to defend ground forces from drones and other aerial threats. L-MADIS achieved IOC last month.
