CBS Moves Matlock And Ghosts To 2027 Midseason

CBS’ Fall 2026 TV schedule will be without two heavy-hitters, Matlock and Ghosts, as the network makes room for Eternally Yours and Cupertino. The new series will launch in the Thursday night line-up, leaving the next seasons of the veteran programs on the shelf until the midseason in 2027.

Ghosts are being traded for vampires with Eternally Yours, and Cupertino is replacing Matlock as the legal drama on offer in the block. But the schedule change comes down to more than genre similarity. It has to do with the lead-ins needed to get the freshman series off the ground successfully.

Why ‘Ghosts’ Season 6 Is Delayed to 2027

Eternally Yours, a comedy from Ghosts showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, will premiere after Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage in the 8:30 p.m. ET slot traditionally held by Ghosts.

When asked about the move, CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach said, "Georgie & Mandy is a show about family, Eternally Yours is also a show about family. We want to give our new shows the best launch pad possible, and we think this is going to be a really formidable pairing.”

Arguably, the two supernatural series make for a better duo as they belong to the same subgenre of comedy. However, the hit Young Sheldon spinoff has led the Thursday night line-up since its first episode. The series took over for its predecessor which began airing at 8 p.m. ET in 2019 after its parent show The Big Bang Theory ended its run.

TBBT held the slot from 2010-2019. CBS’ audience has watched a show from this franchise at that time for 16 years. It’s for this reason that Georgie & Mandy is the better lead-in. Ghosts, while a success for the network and ranking #20 in the Top 20 most-watched series across broadcast and streaming, is untried in that position.

However, fans can still expect holiday specials for the comedy this year. They’ll air in time for Halloween and Christmas. The specials will count toward Ghosts season 6’s 22-episode order.

‘Matlock’ Season 3 Release Date Moved to 2027

Airing two legal dramas back-to-back doesn’t make sense for CBS. However, the strongest case for Matlock’s move to the midseason is the reason behind the network’s new time slot for Elsbeth.

Matlock has aired on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET since its first season. For two years, the show has led out CBS’ quirky procedural block and been paired with Elsbeth. But now the latter will be the lead-in for Cupertino because they’re both series from Robert and Michelle King.

The Kings’ legal drama brings Evil’s Mike Colter back to CBS. While their two shows don’t share the same universe, Elsbeth is a series in The Good Wife franchise, which Colter starred in as Lemond Bishop. Fans of the franchise are more likely to tune-in with Elsbeth airing before it.

Unlike Ghosts, Matlock’s audience can’t anticipate a special that will air in the fall. New episodes won’t release until early 2027. A release month hasn’t been announced and neither has the season 3 episode count.
