WWDC stands for the Worldwide Developers Conference, which is Apple's massive annual event where the company showcases its latest software updates, operating systems, and developer tools.

The annual WWDC still generates significant improvements in software and device functionality ever since Apple changed the game with the iPhone announcement in January 2007 where Steve Jobs sported his trademark black turtleneck sweater.
With podcasting growing more prominent, WWDC announcements regularly include enhancements related to podcasting, and this year was no exception, with improvements in the Apple Podcast App, and the listening experience via AirPods.
At WWDC 2026, it was announced that Mac users can watch video podcasts in a new enhanced experience on Apple Podcasts, with Picture in Picture support that lets them view episodes while multitasking. According to Apple, this enhancement brings the full podcast experience to Mac with audio and video content, complete with transcripts, timed links, and chapters all in one place.
Apple also announced that AirPods users can now enjoy custom EQ to further personalize how their AirPods sound, enhancing their podcast experience. According to Keywords Everywhere, 71% of podcast consumers use earbuds to listen/view their podcasts.
During the Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple previewed its upcoming software releases that will deliver the next generation of Apple Intelligence and introduce Siri AI, an entirely new version of Siri that the company claims is profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable and capable.
The releases also bring powerful and intuitive new features to help parents create safe digital experiences for kids, as well as improvements that further elevate the software design and performance of Apple products while making them more responsive and easier to use with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27 and tvOS 27.
“Apple products are an essential part of people’s lives, and this year we’re bringing powerful new capabilities to empower our users in even more ways,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering in his press statement.

Of course, what we are interested in is the podcasting portion of the WWDC, typically not the most impactful of announcements. Let’s discuss with the Apple podcast app on the iPhone.
It’s an understatement to say that iPhone and iPad users were less than satisfied with Apple’s podcast app. That view remains despite the fact that Apple has worked diligently to improve its podcast app.
According to BGR, "the focus on video podcasts is promising and serves as a move for Apple Podcasts to compete with the likes of YouTube Music and Spotify in this department."

Here’s a recent review from BGR, a major digital media outlet formerly known as Boy Genius Report, that publishes tech news, mobile gadget reviews, and entertainment industry insights.
“The quality of Apple’s software and hardware offerings is well-documented, and its in-house podcast app doesn’t disappoint, either. The record-breaking numbers this app generated in 2025 are proof enough of the company’s dedication to this app, and iOS 26 fixed an outstanding problem by adding support for chapters, along with a host of other new features. The Enhance Dialogue option, a wider array of playback speeds to choose from, and improved Search categories all help make Apple Podcasts feel better than ever to use. Along with automatic chapter generation, timed links are another brilliant addition, showing context-sensitive links to any music, news, or other podcasts that are being spoken about or featured at that moment.”
Some users, however, still complain about the “buggy” nature of Apple Podcasts. In addition, users frequently criticize the Apple Podcasts app for its unintuitive library management, inconsistent playback syncing across devices, and buggy automatic downloads. Common complaints center around difficult episode organization, confusing UI navigation, and the app randomly playing different shows after an episode ends.

Apple Podcasts in tvOS also features a complete redesign with video podcast playback, a new sidebar navigation for easier browsing, and support for podcast creators’ episode and show artwork. The update makes it simple to discover and enjoy video content on the big screen.
Additionally, a new search within show feature helps users across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, and on podcasts.apple.com find the right episode faster by searching directly within a show from its See All Episodes view.
