HIGHLIGHTS

  • A 42-year-old legend ended his career exactly the way he started it: moving forward.
  • The gloves he left in the Octagon told a bigger story than the scorecards ever could.
  • His next chapter in the sport is already underway.

Cub Swanson called it a career and he went out the way just about any fighter would want to retire. To open the UFC 327 main card at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Swanson defeated Nate Landwehr via TKO in the first round. Swanson then tearfully removed his gloves and left them in the center of the Octagon.

What Happened in Swanson's Final Fight?

Swanson swarmed Landwehr from the opening bell and finished him with a barrage of punches at 4:06 of the first round. The referee stepped in as Landwehr absorbed shots along the fence.

It was the kind of finish that defined Swanson’s career. He came forward, threw volume and left no doubt. The gloves in the center of the cage closed the chapter.

Who Is Cub Swanson?

Swanson retires at 42 years old with a career record of 31-14 across 45 professional fights spanning nearly two decades. He earned multiple Fight of the Night bonuses and was a mainstay in the UFC's featherweight division during its most competitive era.

He was never champion, but he was always one of the most exciting fighters on any card he appeared on. The UFC 327 takeaways piece highlighted his retirement as one of the biggest moments of the night.

What Was Swanson's Defining Fight?

The 2016 Fight of the Year against Doo Ho Choi is the one. Three rounds of nonstop violence at UFC 206 that had the crowd on their feet from start to finish. Swanson won by unanimous decision in a fight that still gets replayed whenever the UFC wants to showcase what the sport is at its best.

That fight alone is a legacy. Everything else was a bonus.

What's Next for Swanson?

Swanson has already thrown himself into coaching, and that's likely where he will continue his MMA journey. His fight IQ, experience and ability to communicate make him a natural fit for a coaching role at the highest level.

On the heels of Michael Chiesa’s victorious retirement fight, aging veterans are going out in style in 2026. Swanson’s farewell was one of the most emotional moments of the UFC calendar this year, and it came on a night with several memorable finishes. Here’s all of them from UFC 327.
